ᐅ KALLAX Doors Not Fitting Flush – How to Adjust?

Hello everyone,

I have an IKEA KALLAX shelving unit and want to install the doors. However, I notice that one of the doors sticks out slightly and does not close flush. The gap between the door and the frame is uneven, which affects the overall appearance.

My specific question: How can I properly adjust or align the KALLAX doors so they sit neatly and close evenly? Is there a trick to minimize the door sticking out without having to constantly readjust? I have already tried adjusting the hinges a bit, but the effect was rather minor.

Perhaps others have experience with this issue. Thanks for your tips!

How large is the gap exactly? And is it just one door or several that are misaligned?\

Thank you for the detailed response! The gap varies around 3-4 mm (0.1-0.15 inches) at the upper right corner of the door. Only one of the four doors in my cabinet sticks like this; the others close properly and flush.

I haven’t checked the back panel yet, but I will take a closer look tomorrow. The doors don’t seem warped in terms of material; they just hang a bit stiffly and don’t sit flush on one side. It’s strange that the hinges already offer some resistance when turning, so they’re not loose.

This particularly indicates a local issue, such as a slightly warped or unevenly mounted hinge.

My advice for the next step:

1. Fully loosen the screws on the affected door.
2. Adjust the door to the desired position, focusing especially on the alignment at the top corner.
3. Slightly tighten the screws.
4. Check the angle and gap again.
5. If it is still not perfect, try placing small washers behind the hinge plates to slightly shift the position.

With several small adjustments like these, you can often achieve better alignment.

Also, note the installation height and check whether the cabinet itself has shifted slightly.

I recommend opening and closing the door fully several times after tightening. This allows the hinge to settle properly, and the gap often adjusts accordingly.

If nothing helps for sure, you can also use small rubber or felt strips on the door frame or inside the door. This cushions and prevents it from sticking out.

Sometimes it helps to gently “roll” the KALLAX doors into place. 🙂

I’ve always done this by applying slight pressure to the door towards the hinge after adjustment and then tightening the screws. This can create a bit of mechanical tension, so the door doesn’t stick out as much. And if that doesn’t work, small felt pads are real lifesavers. They keep the door friendly to the wood and also prevent any noise when closing. ;-)

The holes in the back panel where the hinges are mounted must not be too loose, as this can cause misalignment.

This information is crucial. If there is any play in the rear mounting, gaps may still appear even with the hinges adjusted correctly.

It is recommended to compensate for the fit of the holes using washers or adhesive tape. This increases the stability of the hinges and prevents long-term misalignment of the doors.

If adjusting doesn’t help much, try systematically checking the condition of the hinges. Sometimes the hinge is slightly twisted or bent from the factory. Carefully adjusting the individual screws, especially those that control the depth, can make a difference here.

Also keep in mind that standard swing doors don’t always fit perfectly – often, it’s the combination of adjustment and small aids like felt strips or rubber buffers that helps. This way, you get more tolerance in closing during everyday use.
