GelelenGood morning everyone,
I have a question that has been on my mind since installing my new IKEA Metod kitchen with the countertops: What is the best way to clean the countertops without causing scratches?
I have noticed that some cleaning products and methods can damage the surface or leave small scratches. My countertop has a matte finish, not a high-gloss coating, but I still want to clean it thoroughly, especially after cooking, without harming the surface.
Does anyone have experience with specific cleaning agents or techniques that are gentle yet effective at removing dirt?
It would also be important for me to know if there are any products or methods I should definitely avoid to prevent micro-scratches.
I’m really looking forward to your tips and advice!

Hello Gelelen,
For IKEA Metod countertops with a matte finish, I recommend cleaning them with mild, pH-neutral cleaners. Using a damp microfiber cloth and lukewarm water works best. This way, you can remove dirt without damaging the surface.
A few more tips:
- Do not use abrasive cleaning agents (powders or scrubbing pads).
- Avoid harsh chemicals like citric acid, vinegar, or bleach-based cleaners.
- After cleaning, wipe again with clean water to remove any residue.
If you have grease stains, diluted dish soap can help, but always work as gently as possible.
Micro-scratches often occur from using rough sponges or paper towels that are not clean – it’s better to use soft cloths here.
If you like, I can also explain how to repair minor scratches – just let me know!

I have actually cleaned with household paper towels quite often, which might be the cause. Which microfiber cloths would you recommend? There are different qualities and weaves available.
For further clarification: IKEA Metod countertops often consist of coated wood-based materials or laminates. The matte surface is sensitive to mechanical stress.
For cleaning, I recommend:
- Using a soft microfiber cloth (ideally with a finely woven surface without coarse fibers).
- Cleaning agents with a neutral pH (between 6 and 8).
- Avoiding abrasive cleaners, as these can damage the protective layer.
Additionally, please note:
- Do not expose the countertop to sharp objects or harsh chemicals.
- Do not use steam cleaning, as moisture can accumulate.
In short, using gentle mechanical cleaning combined with a neutral cleaner preserves the surface texture and prevents damage or micro-scratches.

I just use warm water and a microfiber cloth.Yes, but why be so cautious? I mean, we have to remember that these countertops are not comparable to high-end kitchen surfaces. Insisting on treating them extremely carefully just to avoid minor scratches seems a bit excessive to me. Of course, avoiding abrasive tools is wise, but sometimes a more thorough cleaning is necessary to remove stubborn dirt. It doesn’t bother me as long as the material isn’t treated too harshly overall.
I also wonder how the IKEA design itself can be so sensitive – kitchens are supposed to withstand everyday use. But of course, anyone can choose to be extra careful if they want.
