I can confirm long-term experience with melamine-coated Billy shelves. After several years, there are hardly any signs of wear, as long as no sharp-edged objects are placed directly on them. Painted surfaces tend to show fine scratches more quickly and reveal fingerprints more clearly, but they often look more attractive. Melamine is definitely easier to maintain since it does not require special polish or paint care.
