Hello everyone,

Yesterday, I removed a linoleum or Stragula floor. A blue/gray felt-like residue remains on the wooden floorboards.

What could this be, and what is the best way to remove it?

P.S. The floorboards will not be refinished – a new floor covering will be installed on top. Due to varying heights, I decided to remove the existing covering and then level the surface.

We rented a machine from O?i for this purpose. It has a sort of blade at the front, which lifts off the residues quite well. However, I can't recall the exact name of the tool right now.

The device is called a carpet stripper. Unfortunately, it doesn’t remove all the soft adhesive residues completely.

Hello questioner,
Stragula is a very old type of floor covering that came onto the market at the end of World War II due to raw material shortages. So, if the old flooring really was “Stragula,” no new floor covering has been installed in that room for the last 65 years.
However, there are also other (more recent) floor coverings with a jute backing. When removing these, only part of the jute fibers come off with the covering; the rest remains firmly bonded to the adhesive on the screed surface.
There are two ways to remove this:
a) For small areas, you can undertake the work manually using a scraper piece by piece. Wearing a dust mask and using a vacuum cleaner is recommended (small fibers in the air are unavoidable).
b) For larger areas, it is more practical to use a floor machine with a wire brush attachment. This is the fastest method. Using a stripper is not ideal because it only removes the covering, leaving the adhesive — along with the adhering jute fibers — on the floor.
