Bau-Teufel4 Jul 2015 19:44Hello,
we have been living in our new timber-framed house for several months now and have generally been satisfied with the indoor climate. However, with the recent hot weather, it has become almost unbearable. Our bedrooms are on the upper floor, with an attic above. The rooms have about 0.5m (1.6 feet) of sloped ceiling, in case that might be relevant.
This evening, I measured 28.6°C (83.5°F) in my young daughter’s bedroom, which has one exterior wall facing north and one facing east, with a window in the east wall and the roller shutters kept closed all the time.
Is this “normal,” or is there a reason for complaint?

Username_wahl4 Jul 2015 19:48May I ask which KFW standard or type of insulation you have?

Bau-Teufel4 Jul 2015 20:08According to the documents, the insulation consists of 240mm (9.5 inches) of stone wool and wood fiber boards on the exterior. I can't say the exact KfW standard, as I wasn't interested, but I believe it was 55. The result of the blower door test was 0.48, in case that is relevant.
In our solid construction house with a ventilation system featuring heat recovery (which cools the incoming outside air using a heat exchanger and has automatic additional cooling, meaning it blows air inside without the exchanger in summer when it’s cooler outside than inside), the temperature in the bedrooms with partially sloped ceilings still reaches 28°C (82°F). Today it was 36°C (97°F) in the shade, and last week it was consistently warm with nighttime temperatures never below 23°C (73°F) outside. At some point, everything heats up... Almost everything, though—in the basement I still have 19.5°C (67°F). I have never enjoyed being near the washing machine so much before...

Is this "normal," or is it a reason for complaint??This is definitely within the normal range – in this kind of weather, everything tends to heat up to some extent. Without active cooling, there isn’t much you can do.

Is this "normal," or a reason for complaint?? I really don’t understand this question again.... Do you think it’s cooler for other homeowners—except those with air conditioning?
In Germany, it’s getting warmer; be prepared and buy an air conditioning unit if it feels too warm for you!
Best regards, Bauexperte
