Hello everyone,

After seeing several discussions about robotic vacuum cleaners in various threads here, we are increasingly convinced that we want to get one of these devices.

The Vorwerk Kobold VR200 and also the VR100 robotic vacuums, which have been mentioned here multiple times, seem quite expensive to me (749 and 599 euros, respectively).

So I went to the website of my trusted online retailer and searched for "robotic vacuum." Then I selected the robotic vacuum cleaner category: 161 results. Prices ranged from around 75 euros to nearly 900 euros.

One model that caught my eye was the Philips FC8820/01 because it reportedly allows you to point the remote control at dirt if something falls on the floor, and it will vacuum it up.

Does anyone have experience with these devices? Can anyone recommend other models?
Do they always only clean the room where you place them, or do they clean the entire floor (assuming the doors are open)?

My requirements:
  • Initially, only one device for the ground floor, possibly another for the upper floor later.
  • Living area about 92 m² (990 sq ft) on the ground floor, with the largest room about 55 m² (592 sq ft).
  • Charging station (I don’t want to plug the device in manually every time).
  • Good cleaning performance.
  • Not excessively noisy (even though we are mostly not at home).
  • Good price/performance ratio.

Thank you very much for your feedback.

I have the Roomba, which I can also recommend. It comes in various versions depending on your needs.
Higher-end models allow you to use virtual barriers and beacons to block off or divide areas. This way, you can ensure certain areas are not cleaned at all, or that the vacuum cleans one area first and then the others afterward. Otherwise, you can simply let the vacuum clean the entire floor randomly. The devices come with cliff sensors and other features to prevent them from falling down stairs. The charging station is automatically controlled. Cleaning schedules can be programmed depending on the model. Maintenance and cleaning are fairly straightforward.
However, you should keep in mind that a robotic vacuum does not completely replace a traditional vacuum cleaner. We still have a Dyson DC 35 cordless vacuum for stairs or quick cleanups when something is dropped. The perfect complement!
We have been using the Roomba for two years now and are very satisfied. Since last autumn, it has been joined by a Robomow, which takes care of the outdoors...

Take a look at the Neato robots. The Vorwerk robotic vacuum cleaners are based on these, but cost only half as much.

Hello,

We are using the Vorwerk VR 200 and are more than satisfied with it.

It can clean our ground floor of about 100 sqm (1,076 sq ft) in one to one and a half battery charges, depending on how dirty it is.

It is so quiet that you can easily watch TV or listen to the radio while it’s running.

The only issue our "Dobby" has is with the cantilever chairs at our dining table – these need to be lifted up because otherwise, it tends to get stuck on them...

Best regards,

Dirk

Almost all cantilever chairs are disliked by pets because of their design...

Yes, I believe that...

It’s really frustrating when the little guy struggles on the pipe lying on the ground at the back and then ends up hanging helplessly with all wheels in the air, calling out for help...
