ᐅ Do-it-yourself work – what tasks did you take on, and would you do them again?

Hello!

I am curious to know which tasks you carried out as self-performed work, how much money you saved in euros (€) by doing so, and how long it took you, including who helped you and their qualifications.
And most importantly: would you do it again?

No, I also put it in quotation marks – value in the subjective sense.

Well, the thread is about doing work yourself – so why is it always necessary to say that you let everything be done by others and you just want to clarify that houses built this way also have value?

A good financial situation – but I would still want to do a lot myself. For me, it’s about the feeling and simply not having to spend all the money on external labor.

I think you’re the only one who has seen it so one-sidedly so far.

I don’t really care if you think that way. I just don’t want to have my free time stolen by the building process. And I can’t relate to that vague feeling you described – I only want it to work properly in the end and for the house to be suitable for 20 or 25 years. I see building purely pragmatically, without any sense of self-fulfillment.

We’re starting construction in June and will also be taking vacations during the build when the daycare is closed. The commute to the site is simply too long. And I don’t enjoy it either. For these reasons, having everything done by others is the ideal approach for us.

Glad that you don’t mind – I just still don’t understand what you want from this thread.

But one question: Is the house your profession? It’s not the first time I’ve heard someone say that their free time is more important to them...

I don’t have children, I enjoy doing the work myself, and I have also made sure to do everything correctly “under the surface.” I’d rather install window sills than sit in front of the TV, and the physical activity comes naturally that way. The house is probably not worth more (monetarily) just because I did the work myself. However, the result and the approach matter, and both have been approved and praised by an experienced construction manager and other tradespeople. I am a trained toolmaker and engineer, so I definitely don’t have two left hands.

Everyone can do as they wish; I would do it exactly the same way again!

To clarify, "I do as much as possible myself" doesn’t work for everyone. I found that a bit too self-congratulatory.

For me, the house is just a place to live, not a hobby.
