Hello everyone,

In our house, we have a double-wing patio door in the living room and a single-wing door in the kitchen. Now we have to decide between a standard threshold (about 8cm (3 inches)) and a low threshold (about 2cm (0.8 inches)). The lower threshold would come with an additional cost.

It seems that the higher threshold is more common among members here. I wanted to ask if anyone has a low threshold and how their experience with it has been.

Regards,
Alex

I like the look of that at first glance, thanks for sharing the picture!

I notice that your terrace is almost level with the room floor. Are there not regulations requiring a height difference of at least 15 cm (6 inches) between the terrace and room floor, or at least 5 cm (2 inches) if there is an appropriate drainage system on the terrace?

What has been your experience regarding tripping? Do you have children? Do they trip over the threshold? Would it be possible to place a mat inside the door to allow it to open properly?

@Flo5983 Do you perhaps have a picture as well? And could you please also answer my questions from #7?

There is also something else – new construction thresholds. Look them up online; they have a different appearance.

Well, it can’t really be any lower with a “normal” setup.

Tripping is no longer an issue. We have three children (7, 7, and 2 years old) who can run in and out there perfectly well. It was different in our old house.
I don’t know the exact regulations about height differences. I don’t know anyone here who chose 5 cm (2 inches) — that just looks odd — it’s either a proper step or completely flush. The drainage issue doesn’t apply with our wooden terrace anyway, because it is installed to be "water-permeable." The space below is about 20 cm (8 inches), which ensures proper drainage. However, with paved surfaces, a drainage channel should definitely be installed.

Hello,

we also had our sliding door to the terrace installed with a low threshold.

Our terrace is connected to the window sill, which slopes gently, so the transition to the terrace is level.

Our threshold is about 1.5 cm (0.6 inches) high.

Since our previous home had a threshold of about 15 cm (6 inches), we are very impressed by the increased comfort of the low threshold – now we can actually walk outside easily without having to watch out for any tripping hazards.

Best regards,

Dirk

The window installer who fitted the doors and windows in the extension at my parents’ house said that if you install a door with a low threshold, there is no warranty that water will not enter from the outside during heavy rain.
