With all due respect, if a contractor already makes me uneasy before starting the work, I look for another contractor who knows what they’re doing. I am definitely not going to compromise my nice roof design because of a contractor’s exaggerated concerns! As you mentioned, with proper waterproofing, there should be no issues. If a contractor can’t properly seal a gutter like that, I certainly don’t want them waterproofing anything else on my house.

klblb schrieb:You express that nicely and naturally, and you are basically right. However – you wouldn’t believe how many homeowners, especially with roofing contractors, have later abandoned an internal roof design. 😕
I’m not going to give up my beautiful roof shape just because of a craftsman’s exaggerated fears!

I generally agree with you. The roofer, a family friend, is capable of installing such a roof according to DIN standards, but he simply advises against it. It’s good advice because this type of drainage system apparently has caused problems after some time on several occasions. Whether that is actually the case, I can’t say for sure, but it doesn’t sound entirely illogical.

I can’t really judge whether that is actually the case, but it doesn’t sound entirely illogical.

Hello building expert,
I agree with you that many homeowners can be unsettled by contractors and might end up deviating from their original plans.
The roofer’s comment that such drainage could cause problems in the future makes sense to me due to his technical reasoning. This topic was posted in the forum to find out if others have faced the same decision and maybe found a technical alternative solution that we haven’t considered yet. But so far, that does not seem to be the case.
Best regards

Baustelle201622 Feb 2015 07:33Just to be clear: I have no experience with the shown roof drainage system.
I don’t think the roofer’s warning is wrong, even though it’s unclear what concern lies behind it (liability for poor workmanship?).
But what happens with this system if, for example, leaves block the downpipe opening? With an external gutter, the water would simply fall from it onto the ground. With an internal gutter, does the rotten brown streak (let’s assume the worst) then run down the previously spotless white facade? 😱
