ᐅ What features did you include in your house, and what did you decide to leave out?

Hello,

When planning and building a house, you focus on the essentials and the budget. Some wishes get dropped along the way. But certain small luxuries or nice features are important to you, even if they are not strictly necessary, and you end up including them anyway.

For us, a heated conservatory was an unattainable dream. However, we treated ourselves to tiled, walk-in showers, even though they take up more space.

I would love to hear what you have given up and what you managed to include.

Best regards

@Bautraum2015 Sorry, I don’t know the individual prices. In my opinion, we got a package price for aluminum plus motors compared to the planned plastics. (And that was my husband’s construction site. ) No idea what a single motor cost.

@Masipulami Ugh, I’m happy for you too, but I just don’t like those spotlights. They simply blind me from below. (Or from the side. Or from above… ) Unfortunately, this is also popular in public areas, and I’m not really a fan. It looks nice when thick snow falls on them, then they glow mysteriously and don’t blind you, haha.
Our rainwater cistern also died a slow death due to savings. Financially, even considering water prices over the long term, it just doesn’t really pay off.

@ypg At least it’s great for the environment that you have a cistern! You can pat yourself on the back. That’s something. (No irony)
Wow, a natural stone wall. How should I imagine that—one of the interior walls is built from natural stones?
And if I may be so curious, how many square meters is your house? Because I imagine it’s tricky to fit the office, gym, and guest room all on the ground floor. (<- I’m impressed here too, even though it usually comes with an “eek”. )

Natural stone wall: cladding with quartzite strips
Office, gym, and guest room is one single space. One room is completely sufficient for us, as mentioned before: there are only two of us.

Our spotlights, on the other hand, are actually quite discreet and don’t cause any glare. They emit a nice warm light.

Oh man, you really shouldn’t check in here too often, because it only gives you "silly" ideas—silly is in quotes on purpose.

@ypg May I ask how many square meters the wall was and what kind of price one should expect? I’m asking because I know my partner really wants something like that on a wall, possibly on the living room wall behind the TV or at a corner transition between two walls. Maybe you could also share some pictures of your dream wall.

I would have loved to have a wall like that too, but we had to choose between a natural stone wall or high-quality carpet for the upper floor. I opted for a somewhat expensive velour carpet.

I also think lighting the steps looks very stylish. My husband doesn’t agree. We finally settled on wall lamps.

A rainwater tank is optional for us, not mandatory. Next year, we plan to install an above-ground one. It will be placed behind the garage and is meant to collect rainwater from the garage and carport. I’m curious to see if we can make it work the way we imagine.

@Häuslebau3r 13 sqm (140 sq ft) for 400 €, of course installed by ourselves

Maybe not glued perfectly, but we don't mind

I also thought of 3 additional electrical highlights that might be useful for you:
Built-in radio in the bathroom
Main switch (like for lights) for the outlet where the receiver and TV are connected
Two-way switch for the bedside lamps, so you can have mood lighting before going to bed (on at the door, off in bed)

Best regards, Yvonne
