ᐅ What features did you include in your house, and what did you decide to leave out?

Hello,

When planning and building a house, you focus on the essentials and the budget. Some wishes get dropped along the way. But certain small luxuries or nice features are important to you, even if they are not strictly necessary, and you end up including them anyway.

For us, a heated conservatory was an unattainable dream. However, we treated ourselves to tiled, walk-in showers, even though they take up more space.

I would love to hear what you have given up and what you managed to include.

Best regards

Well, otherwise we would have enclosed the staircase. We have the kitchen, dining room, and living room arranged in a kind of “U” shape with the staircase in the middle; everything else is open. The dining area is directly connected to the kitchen and therefore visible, and with a slight angled view, the sofa area should also be visible. Yes, communication is definitely possible. Additionally, on the other side of the staircase, there is planned storage for CDs and LPs; otherwise, you would probably be looking at them from behind.

@Skaddler: That sounds really good. So, the staircase is open—does that mean the base of the stairs is in the living area or the hallway? When you go upstairs, can you see the people in the living room? I hope that makes sense.

I think I know what you mean – I probably didn’t express it clearly. The staircase is already enclosed, but we would have closed off the space under the stairs anyway. It’s a concrete staircase since we really regret having our current wooden stairs. So, when going up, you don’t see into the living room, and the staircase doesn’t start there either; it begins in the entrance area. Maybe I’ll sketch it out in the next few days, as I have time (off work sick until Thursday).

Hello,

we are finally nearing the end of our planning...

We decided to skip the basement!! Hopefully, that was a good decision, but otherwise, we would have had a 130 sq m (1,400 sq ft) basement, which is way too large... and possibly water issues, since we live in an open-pit mining area (Hambach).

We treated ourselves to
- a large conservatory extending from the roof
- around 230 sq m (2,480 sq ft) of living space for 4 people
- all our "adult rooms" completely on the ground floor
- an open kitchen
- many glass surfaces

Hey Weimy, where exactly are you building at the open-pit mine? That’s where I grew up.

I am also planning to install a similar toilet. Have you already gathered any experience with how easily it gets dirty, and would you buy this toilet again?
