Hello,
there are these folding scissors-type stairs that can be used instead of the "normal" wooden retractable attic ladders for access through the attic hatch.

These scissors stairs are made of metal and would mean a higher cost compared to the wooden ladders. Apparently, the scissors stairs have a higher load capacity.
So we are a bit undecided.

Maybe someone here has already looked more closely into the differences and can give us some arguments for or against such a scissors-type staircase?

Thanks in advance.

Try to come up with an argument in favor of this heavy-duty staircase yourself, especially if your building services are not supposed to be located directly on the load-bearing floor!

It’s also about whether there are other advantages and disadvantages to consider... I thought that’s what a forum is for—to benefit from the thoughts others have already had and not have to research and analyze everything in detail by yourself.

If you don’t have an answer, that’s just how it is. A forum isn’t always a magic solution; sometimes questions get bounced back.

I first had to look up what a "scissor staircase" is ... and that says a lot about me

I can think of only two good reasons to choose this: Either you want to move very heavy materials to the attic, or you already weigh so much that transporting just a few books would exceed the load capacity of a standard folding attic ladder (BET) of 160 kg (350 lbs). On the other hand, standard folding attic ladders need to be used cautiously unless the user wants to follow Chevy Chase’s example. In that respect, electrifying the ladder could make sense, and you are probably right that the additional cost is not insignificant.

That’s what I actually meant with my reply:

I deliberately used the term heavy-duty staircase. I just need to be more direct.
