joshhunter737 Jul 2025 08:11Hello everyone,
I have installed a retractable arm awning without guide rails above my terrace. Overall, it works well, but since I started using it, I have been having issues with the fabric tension.
When retracting, folds form in the middle of the awning fabric, which roll up poorly. When extending it, folds appear that partially run over the fabric support ring – which has already caused three tears in the fabric.
I tried adjusting the fabric support ring to improve the tension, but unfortunately without much success.
Additionally, I had to mount the awning with a relatively shallow angle to avoid conflicts with the existing terrace roof. This probably limits the fabric’s runoff slightly, but a steeper angle was not structurally feasible.
Other than that, the awning works perfectly – only the issue with the fabric concerns me.
My question to you:
How can the fabric tension on a retractable arm awning be properly adjusted?
Are there any other tips to prevent folding when retracting and extending?
Photos are attached so you can get a better idea.
Thank you in advance for your help!
Best regards,
Josh

Jesse Custer7 Jul 2025 09:21Regarding the tension itself: it results from the extension movement of the arms and the rotation of the roller. So what you need to find is a way to adjust these relative to each other – exactly where this is located on your awning, you will need to figure out accordingly. For us, it was a small pin with +/- adjustment.
The bigger problem I see, however, is the extremely uneven tension across the fabric. And there isn’t much you can do about that... it’s basically already messed up...

I need to look again for that adjustment option. Where did you find that small pin on your unit?

Jesse Custer7 Jul 2025 14:46I have to pass on this one – I was only shown it in case something comes up... we had the unit installed by a professional... I haven’t had to do anything with it for nearly 10 years now... but it’s also been in continuous use at my parents' place...

How can the fabric tension on an articulated arm awning be correctly adjusted? Are there any other tips to prevent wrinkling when retracting and extending?
