Hello,
I wanted to ask you all, we are facing very hot days again.
How can you cool the house down a bit without using an air conditioner or reduce the sensation of heat?
We can’t simply install an air conditioner because we have a KfW 55 standard and are not allowed to make any changes for the first 10 years, or we would need to hire an energy consultant to recalculate everything.
We shade all the windows during such heat, but we can’t keep all the windows closed. The dog also needs to be able to go into the garden.
What would you recommend?
Should we use regular fans? Tower fans or pedestal fans?
What do you think about fans with humidifiers? Wouldn’t they just increase the indoor humidity unnecessarily?
Are there fans or devices that can actively cool the air, or small air conditioners that don’t require fresh air intake, an outdoor unit, or a vent hose leading outside?
On very hot days above 30°C (86°F), we have about 25–26°C (77–79°F) inside as the highest temperature.

I mainly wanted to ask if there are any devices (without an exhaust hose) that could cool by about 1-3 degrees. Affordable and easy to use.Thermodynamics says "nope" to that.
When cold is produced, heat is generated that has to go somewhere... that’s why opening a refrigerator door won’t help cool down a kitchen...

wiltshire1 Jul 2025 08:20If it’s only about air movement, a cheap axial fan is a good choice. If you want to direct the airflow in some way and keep the noise as low as possible, the devices become more expensive.
What Dyson does better than others: marketing. Our son took a Dyson fan when clearing out my mother’s apartment. The device works well, but it is by no means “exceptional” as claimed.

FrankChief1 Jul 2025 08:43@wiltshire The fan in the bedroom should, of course, be as quiet as possible. It should also provide a cooling effect on the skin simply through the airflow.
The air needs to be well directed and evenly distributed throughout the room so that it feels somewhat cooler.
I already thought that the Dyson is mostly just marketing.
What type of fan would you recommend? One with good airflow, as quiet as possible, and a decent range on higher settings. We want to place one in the bedroom, living room, and attic.

@ypg Do you know what the Dyson does better than other fans? The Dyson is really ridiculously expensive.
We don’t need the air purification. We have the table fan (I think it’s the CF1) for under 300€ (about $320).
We were impressed by “the Dyson” in a restaurant, especially how powerful its bigger model is.
Cheaper no-brand fans might also do the job, but in my opinion they are quite loud.
If you have a central ceiling light fixture, maybe there are similar options among ceiling fans?
For a few days, a wet towel hung in the window might help.

I don’t have enough knowledge about the noise quality of fans. The Dyson is quieter than the cheap tower fan I once bought from eBay for the kids. I would suggest considering the Rowenta models.

In my opinion, these devices are only suitable for spot cooling and short-term use. Keeping entire rooms “cool” constantly is difficult. A fan does not cool. It only prevents air from becoming stagnant and stops the room from feeling hot AND stuffy. The slow-running ceiling fans, which some probably only know from American movies, are designed exactly for that: silently preventing the feeling of still air.
