Hello,
I wanted to ask you all, we are facing very hot days again.
How can you cool the house down a bit without using an air conditioner or reduce the sensation of heat?
We can’t simply install an air conditioner because we have a KfW 55 standard and are not allowed to make any changes for the first 10 years, or we would need to hire an energy consultant to recalculate everything.
We shade all the windows during such heat, but we can’t keep all the windows closed. The dog also needs to be able to go into the garden.
What would you recommend?
Should we use regular fans? Tower fans or pedestal fans?
What do you think about fans with humidifiers? Wouldn’t they just increase the indoor humidity unnecessarily?
Are there fans or devices that can actively cool the air, or small air conditioners that don’t require fresh air intake, an outdoor unit, or a vent hose leading outside?
On very hot days above 30°C (86°F), we have about 25–26°C (77–79°F) inside as the highest temperature.

At night, we fully ventilate across the upper floor. During the day, the shutters are closed about three-quarters of the way.
The awning on the terrace roof blocks the sun at the terrace door, so no shutter is needed there.
The photovoltaic system on the roof probably helps reduce heat as well. Currently, the indoor temperature remains comfortably between 23 and a maximum of 25°C (73 and 77°F). On the upper floor, it tends to be slightly warmer than on the ground floor. This is likely easier to achieve in a rural area than in a big city.
It is said that evaporative cooling, for example by hanging a wet towel in the room, can help. However, this depends on the general humidity level in the room.

so is it basically only a portable air conditioner with an exhaust hose? I actually don’t want that The air conditioner cools and dehumidifies. Both are helpful in weather like today to achieve more comfortable indoor temperatures.
Evaporation has quite a good effect with dry air. If it is humid like right now, you can forget about that.
Tonight we will turn on the portable air conditioner in the sleeping area for a short time. In weather like this, unfortunately, it’s no longer enough to simply let the cool air from the forest uphill next to the house flow through the house as usual.

FrankChief1 Jul 2025 07:32We decided against a portable air conditioner.
If an air conditioner, then a proper one.
How can we provide some relief for now? It’s not extremely hot at the moment, so we don’t necessarily need air conditioning.
Inside the house, temperatures are between 24–26°C (75–79°F) at most.
What kind of fan would you recommend?
A pedestal fan, tower fan, or one of those bladeless fans like a Dyson?
@ypg Do you know what a Dyson can do better than other fans? The Dyson is quite expensive.
We don’t need air purification.

What kind of fan would you recommend to us?The cheapest one you can still find at the hardware store.FrankChief schrieb:

If air conditioning, then a proper system. That’s unclear. It’s warm now, and you don’t want to cool or can’t cool. Is 250€ for a portable unit as a temporary solution until you get a “proper” air conditioner too much? Would you rather complain and sweat?
Then buy fans that circulate the warm air. If you think that’s a better way to spend your money...

I don't feel like messing around with anything for the portable air conditioner.
Besides, we have insect screens on all the windows, so we can't just attach the hose there easily.
At the moment, we have a cheap tower fan, which actually works quite well.
I mainly wanted to ask if there are units (without an exhaust hose) that could cool by about 1–3 degrees Celsius (2–5 degrees Fahrenheit). Something cheap and without much effort.
Such devices don't really exist, so fans are probably the way to go.
When we come in from outside, we always think, "Oh, it's already a bit cool."
