Hello,

I wanted to ask you all, we are facing very hot days again.

How can you cool the house down a bit without using an air conditioner or reduce the sensation of heat?

We can’t simply install an air conditioner because we have a KfW 55 standard and are not allowed to make any changes for the first 10 years, or we would need to hire an energy consultant to recalculate everything.

We shade all the windows during such heat, but we can’t keep all the windows closed. The dog also needs to be able to go into the garden.

What would you recommend?

Should we use regular fans? Tower fans or pedestal fans?

What do you think about fans with humidifiers? Wouldn’t they just increase the indoor humidity unnecessarily?

Are there fans or devices that can actively cool the air, or small air conditioners that don’t require fresh air intake, an outdoor unit, or a vent hose leading outside?

On very hot days above 30°C (86°F), we have about 25–26°C (77–79°F) inside as the highest temperature.

Why shouldn't a split air conditioning system work? They are even subsidized.

@tomtom79 then we would have to have the house recalculated to check if it still meets the KfW 55 standard.
We are not allowed to make any changes in the first 10 years that could affect the KfW 55 status.

That’s what we were told.
And if we installed an air conditioning system, an energy consultant would have to calculate whether it still qualifies as KfW 55, since the electricity used for cooling would be included in the calculation.

Our KfW 55 house is now 2 years old.

Buy a small portable air conditioner, make a panel for a window, and run the exhaust hose through it. This won’t create a comfortable temperature but will provide some relief.

@wiltshire so basically only a portable air conditioner with an exhaust hose would work? I actually don’t want that.

It’s not unbearable for us either.
I was just hoping to lower the room temperature by 2-3 degrees with simple aids.

What do you think about fans with water cooling? That just increases humidity unnecessarily, right?

In our rented apartment, we have had a portable air conditioner for a few years now (with the hose pinched in the roller shutter), and we have to turn it off after a while because it gets too cold.

Currently, we mostly use it only in the living room. The rest of the apartment remains warmer, but not to the extent that I would move the unit to another room. We usually run it for just 1-2 hours.

I can definitely recommend it. Ours was quite expensive at 800€ (about $870), but it was absolutely worth it. There are cheaper options available as well.

I wouldn’t suggest using a fan with water because of the increased humidity. That just makes the air feel even hotter and unpleasant.
