ᐅ Experiences with IKEA Kitchens – Quality, Installation, Service?

Hello everyone,

I’m currently thinking about getting a new kitchen and have come across IKEA kitchens. The price-performance ratio seems pretty good, and I like the design. However, I’ve heard mixed opinions from friends – some are very satisfied, while others have had issues with certain cabinet parts or the assembly process.

So I wanted to ask here: What experiences have you had with IKEA kitchens?
  • How satisfied are you with the quality of the furniture (e.g., cabinets, countertops, drawers, appliances)?
  • Did you assemble the kitchen yourself or have it assembled? Was it complicated?
  • How well does the planning service in-store and online work?
  • What about customer service when parts are missing or something breaks?
  • Is there anything you would do differently in hindsight?

I’d love to hear about your experiences, both positive and negative – especially if you’ve been using it for a few years! Thanks in advance 🙂

Best regards,
Sandra

How was your experience with installing and the fitting accuracy of the Ikea cabinet boxes when combined with non-Ikea appliances and a non-Ikea countertop?

Ikea appliances and non-Ikea appliances have the same dimensions. Everything fits fine. A non-Ikea countertop is no problem either; you just have it custom-made to fit exactly.

Were there any particular challenges regarding measurements, cutouts, or adjustments? And do you have any tips on what to pay special attention to when planning and purchasing external appliances to ensure everything fits in the end?

No, they’re just cabinet boxes like any others (also from other kitchen manufacturers). Hinges and such come from well-known manufacturers (there are basically only two of those in Germany). There are differences in quality—and therefore price—when it comes to the fronts. You’ll have to check that out yourself.

It works. We have furnished the children’s apartments with IKEA kitchens.

The cabinets and drawers are basic but acceptable. We bought 2 refrigerators, 1 induction cooktop, and 1 oven from IKEA. All appliances work flawlessly.

I had the 17- and 19-year-old boys assemble the kitchen themselves so they could learn some practical skills and develop respect for the work involved. I was available to advise, despite not being a tradesman. There were no problems. The boys just didn’t finish the job completely (baseboards and small details).

We built a simple straight kitchen and didn’t need the planning software. The planning software for PAX cabinets had an incorrect measurement for the corner cabinet six years ago. As a result, I made one cabinet a bit narrower so everything would fit in the space we had built specifically for a PAX system.

So far, we have never had any problems with IKEA parts.

No, I would do it the same way again. The older son has since moved out, and we now use the apartment as a guest flat and my office. The kitchen and laminate flooring now look noticeably outdated compared to the current furnishings, but that’s okay and can be changed when the time comes. IKEA kitchen furniture seems to be very popular on classified ads, which makes upgrading attractive, as I don’t like throwing away things that are still in good condition.

Unfortunately, this is not entirely true. Semi-integrated dishwashers from other manufacturers do not fit easily. At least, that was the case four years ago. You need special hinges or have to do some modifications.
We also have an Ikea kitchen and are satisfied. We installed it ourselves, which was straightforward.

I installed an old Ikea kitchen in the utility room, a Faktum system. I remember spending several weeks collecting the fronts from more than three Ikea stores because they were no longer reliably (and without notice) available. That is why our fronts are in two different colors. Then Faktum was replaced by Metod, and simple upgrades from baskets to drawers were no longer possible.

You should be prepared for the possibility that some items may no longer be available.

A few years ago, I retrofitted a 40 cm (16 inches) cabinet in my Nolte kitchen. Unfortunately, the Ikea front was not suitable for a drawer cabinet, even though it was sold as such, so the door is unfortunately unstable. The tall drawers with their internal supports also look somewhat flimsy compared to other kitchens.

However, if you are confident in assembling cabinets on a large scale and enjoy DIY projects, Ikea can be satisfactory. Many components are modular, which appeals to Ikea fans. The hinges are branded quality parts.

Still, I must warn that not everything is seamlessly integrated; the cabinet-inside-cabinet (Ikea concept) can take up extra space and may look a bit flimsy. Ikea appliances are said to have smaller internal volumes because of inferior internal insulation (e.g., when installed with sand-lime brick and an oven).

So, if certain aspects of Ikea kitchens don’t suit you, you will likely not be satisfied with their kitchen concept either, although others are happy with it.

I know from fully integrated machines that they require a specific opening angle to work properly with the baseboard without adjustments (Ikea has very low baseboards, creating larger surfaces for drawers, etc.). Otherwise, depending on the appliance, there are indeed special sliding hinges or similar accessories available from Ikea.

But they are also from well-known brand manufacturers. Nowadays, you can even get glass or similar options for Metod.

I hate Ikea – LOL – but for self-assembly kitchens, the price-performance ratio is hard to beat. With delivery and installation, you might as well go to a furniture store or kitchen studio (but please don’t compare them with high-end kitchens).

Unfortunately, this sliding hinge is no longer available at IKEA in Germany. There seems to be something suitable, as I read somewhere, but simply installing it is unfortunately not possible.
We shortened the front panel.
