Hello everyone,
We are planning to have our terrace built soon.
Our landscaping contractor offers to install the terrace either on gravel or in mortar concrete.
Since we want a relatively large terrace (36 sqm (387 sq ft)), the concrete option would be much more expensive.
Additionally, in a few years, we would like to add a louvered roof. Installing the slabs on gravel would make it much easier to add concrete footings later on.
However, I keep reading that laying slabs on gravel often causes problems.
Therefore, I would be very interested if anyone can share their personal experience?
Our landscaping contractor said that if we use large slab sizes (at least 80x80 cm (31x31 inches)), he does not see any issues with gravel installation. He would grout with epoxy resin.
Who has installed their terrace on gravel and would do it again, and who would choose differently next time?
Best regards

We had 40x80 cm (16x31 inches) slabs installed in a sand and gravel bed. This was also simpler because we were still unsure if tiles were really the right choice for us.
Conclusion: After some time (now about 3 years), there is some slight movement at the edges. However, for us, this only occurs where we later added foundations for the roof. Some joints at the edges are now also slightly wider than others. So, at some point, we will need to have this corrected.

In principle, you could just fill the joints later if weeds actually start to grow, right? I'm only concerned that the gravel between the slabs will spread all over the terrace when cleaning or sweeping, etc.Nothing will come loose. If you're unsure, feel free to come over and sweep my terrace in all directions—I don’t want anything for it. Afterwards, we can have a beer.G
Gerddieter2 May 2025 14:45I have 120×60 cm (47×24 inches) ceramic tiles installed on a gravel bed – one is already loose after 2 months. But whatever, I’ll wait and see – if it stays with just the one, it will be fixed eventually.
