ᐅ $13,000 to replace an old shower and bathtub?

Hello everyone,

maybe someone can give me some advice. It’s about a rather small bathroom where the bathtub and shower need to be replaced, along with the related tiling work.
I received a quote from a company for just under €13,000, with almost €9,000 being labor costs.
That can’t be normal—complete bathrooms can be built for that price. The problem is that work has already started because we had water damage, but no one could have expected such a price. Or is this normal?
Looking forward to your experiences.

Thanks and sunny regards

Almost €90 per hour including tax for a regular installer hour, wow. It seems to me that this trend runs throughout the entire offer, and I can understand why it seems too high to you. I would stop it and be willing to live with a compromise for a while. He himself knows very well that it’s really expensive. I only see a simple bathtub-shower combo, nothing special. Do sinks, faucets, and other fixtures still come on top of that?

I think the quote is simply incorrect, and the tile position has been listed twice by mistake.

P.S. I had a minor liability claim on my car. 17.50 EUR net for 1 work unit. My workshop charged 175 EUR for 1 hour. Of course, insurance matters. Still quite extreme.

Are tiles, washbasins, faucets, etc. added on top of that?

No, really just the shower, bathtub, and the associated tiling work; the rest of the bathroom remains unchanged.

Trying to take advantage of the insurance company seems to have become the norm, but in the end, it always falls back on the community as a whole.
My impression is that pure greed has found its way into the trades as well. My neighbor also paid about €200 for one hour of car repair work, sorry but I find that downright outrageous.
I occasionally see a medical bill, and I have to say, compared to a cardiologist or internist, they almost seem like low performers when you look at the rates of an auto repair shop or a tiler. Such hourly charges cannot be justified by anything anymore—not by COVID, the price of wood, or anything else—and certainly not by electricity costs when you take a closer look. Everyone finds some trivial reason for their price hikes.
So, for example, if a hardworking nurse had to deal with water damage like that, they would basically be bankrupt.

That is exactly your problem. You hired someone without getting a quote first. And now you are surprised that it is expensive... That was (to put it mildly) not ideal...

Best regards,

Andreas

Of course, but that’s not the issue. Naturally, the work done will be paid for, but the follow-up contract doesn’t have to be awarded. My basic question is whether this is normal or if I should hire a different company for the remaining work.
