Hello everyone,
we are currently considering shading/covering options for our terrace.
We have a terrace on the south side that is 4 meters (13 feet) deep and just under 8 meters (26 feet) wide.
However, the terrace is arranged in such a way that we do not want or need to cover or shade the entire space, as that would be excessive and unnecessary.
An important factor for us is a depth of about 3 to 4 meters (10 to 13 feet), preferably 4 meters (13 feet). In terms of width, the awning should ideally be around 5 to 6 meters (16 to 20 feet).
Basically, all our terrace furniture is weatherproof, so I generally leave everything in place year-round (whether winter or summer). In winter, everything is made weatherproof accordingly, but in summer, it all stays outside.
Considering the price ratio, as well as the installation difficulty, effort, and space requirements, a proper awning is a reasonable alternative for me.
I don't really see the advantages of a permanent terrace roof.
However, I do have some concerns regarding an awning:
- We experience very strong winds in our new build area. Can an awning with an extended depth of 3 to 4 meters (10 to 13 feet) really withstand strong winds? Are awnings generally rainproof enough to allow sitting outside and grilling comfortably even in light rain?
Has anyone gone through similar considerations and can share experiences regarding awnings?
I look forward to any input on this topic!

DaGoodness29 Apr 2025 08:23We had an articulated arm awning (7x4m (23x13 feet)) from a well-known manufacturer. New, this awning would have cost over €7,000 including installation through the dealer.
We then bought it used from a private seller and had it installed by the dealer. Total cost was €2,600.
After 2 years, we dismantled it and had a patio roof built (10x3.5m (33x11.5 feet)). The cost for this was €6,200.
Whenever it was a bit windy, the awning had to be retracted and we ended up sitting in direct sunlight again.
Thanks to the patio roof, we now have shade at any time, can sit outside comfortably in wind and weather (even heavy summer rain), and everything on the terrace (table, chairs, grill, shoes) stays dry. For example, we no longer have to remember to put away the tablecloth or seat cushions because it might rain.
The awning was definitely a bad investment for us, and the patio roof was money well spent, as we are very satisfied with it.
If only we had known this beforehand.

That does cost a few euros, especially at that size.
@Nida35a has a sun sail like that, which I also find quite nice, but it wasn’t exactly cheap either. Our electric sun sail is the right solution for us. On the west side, we now have a vertical awning for low-angled sun.

After 2 years, we took it down and had a patio roof (10x3.5m (33x11.5 feet)) built instead. The cost for that was €6,200.

If only we had known that before. Did a local company install the patio roof?
€6,200 definitely sounds very reasonable – does that price include a sun sail or awning for shading?
For us, the advantages of a solid patio roof also outweigh the alternatives, and we are planning to get one as well. We are currently gathering quotes – whether it will be a KD patio roof, one from Schweng, or maybe from a local company is still undecided.

€6,200 (about $6,800) definitely sounds very reasonable – does that price already include a sunshade or awning for shading?
For us, the advantages of a fixed roof also outweigh the alternatives, and we are planning to get one as well. We are currently collecting quotes – whether it will be a KD roof, one from Schweng, or maybe from a local company is still undecided. €6,200 (about $6,800) sounds pretty good to me too – but I can’t imagine that an awning is included in that price.
If I’m considering a fixed roof, I’m leaning towards Pergolux – so far, I’ve only heard positive feedback about them.
By the way, starting this Friday until Sunday, there is a promotion with up to 35% off.

DaGoodness29 Apr 2025 09:16Our canopy is from the company Ophelders in Erkelenz.
The awning is not included, as we opted for the more affordable option with 16mm (0.63 inch) six-wall polycarbonate panels in opal color.
This is completely sufficient for our needs, and we are very satisfied.

By the way, from Friday to Sunday there’s a promotion with up to 35% off. They have promotions all year round, so don’t be misled by that. I bought a louvered pergola from them. The price-to-quality ratio has been very good so far, but assembling it using the instructions wasn’t easy. In recent weeks and months, there have been many negative reports about delayed or missing deliveries and missing parts, as well as poor customer service. However, I purchased mine much earlier and haven’t experienced any issues.
