Hello everyone, we recently purchased a house and are currently considering how to redesign the living room to create more space by combining the bedroom and utility room into one area, as this will later be used as an office with about 10-12m² (108-129 sq ft).
At the very end, I will, of course, attach the floor plan.
The plan is to create an opening from the living room towards the bedroom. However, the bedroom will not be fully used but connected to the utility room through another opening between these two rooms.
Between the bedroom and living room, there will be a drywall partition at the same height as the utility room wall to ensure it looks visually coherent.
The couch is supposed to go into the approximately 2-meter (6.5 feet) freed-up space. It is 3 meters (10 feet) wide. Now, my problem is that on both sides there must be a base about 25cm (10 inches) high for the steel beam, and these two bases would be exactly at the height of the couch and TV.
Do you perhaps have a great idea for this?
I would appreciate any suggestions.

Comparing to the current residents, I think misses the point a bit—we want to have our dream home in the long run, and right now the living area is simply lacking a bit. Otherwise, I could have saved myself this whole discussion and just lived as it is now with the wooden ceiling and so on. I believe this is already largely understood here.
One thing that has become clear over the years is that really detailed descriptions and photos are necessary to receive genuinely helpful feedback. As soon as participants have to struggle, interpret things, or miss information, the thread quickly goes silent—and that is exactly what the original poster doesn’t want. Therefore, the thread starter has a basic responsibility to contribute.
You should actually provide as much input and information as possible—better too much than too little. Nowadays, over 80% of threads here quickly die out, which in my opinion is mainly due to the original poster giving limited information or not participating regularly and in a timely manner in the discussion.
You need to know the whole picture, both structurally and personally, to get interesting inspiration; otherwise, standard solutions can be found in home improvement stores or brochures.
It is important, for example, whether you are “TV junkies” (not meant negatively at all), or if you occasionally watch shows like Biene Maja with the kids, whether you plan to replace or redesign the kitchen in the long term or prefer to keep it as it is because you like it that way. Also, the connection to the terrace matters, or whether you value lots of natural light, or if you already have a 2025 model TV that hardly reflects.
Your initial post is therefore more than sparse, and you should improve it, because often the problem is not the room itself but the lack of imagination or visualization—and that is exactly what a forum is for.
In the end, what you decide to do is ultimately up to you.
Your dream home is not created by simply moving a wall, but rather through a coherent overall concept tailored exactly to your situation. It is also important to know whether the person asking the question can or wants to do some work themselves, what budget is available, and what the overall goals are.
Responding to your brief initial post without proper drawings and measurements would have been possible in just two short sentences; however, now you are sharing more information, which is good. It just needs to be comprehensive and transparent so that real help can be provided.

and right now there is simply a bit missing in the living area. Above all, there is the willingness to accept different room layouts in an existing house and to feel comfortable there again. Instead, people keep trying to change what is different into something conventional and familiar.
I always find it interesting to change myself rather than adapting the surroundings.

if a breakthrough is made, then only one, from the "living" area into the "sleeping" area, and the utility room stays as it is. Here I simply see the problem that the room is no longer pleasant: 4 meters (13 feet) wide over almost 11 meters (36 feet) in length, plus a visual extension with the balcony.

hanghaus202313 Apr 2025 11:36The outdoor areas don’t really match the plan.

Is the interior also this different?
If you want to remove or move walls, it’s quite important to know where the walls are located in the attic.
Here’s another suggestion.

Or like this, with a south-facing view.

Then use it as a template for your design software.
You might want to rotate the table.

Is the area above the garage in the basement a south-facing terrace?
Why is there always so little information?
