We bought a house built in 1991 last year and renovated it, including installing new triple-glazed uPVC windows and (thermal) insulated roller shutter boxes.

However, the windows are quite noisy, and you can hear the wind and traffic noise humming and droning. It’s not very loud but still annoying. Now I’m trying to identify the weak points, but I can’t clearly pinpoint them. Maybe there are several areas?

- The roller shutter box has only 2cm (1 inch) of insulation at the bottom and sides. This seems sufficient for thermal insulation but might be too little for soundproofing?
- The window reveals (I see clear heat loss here, but maybe a 6°C (11°F) difference is still normal?)
- The glass panes themselves?
- Or perhaps the 36cm (14 inch) brick masonry?

Where can or should the window installer make improvements? What can realistically be done afterwards at reasonable cost?

Thank you!

I suspect the issue isn’t the windows themselves, but rather the installation. The windows might be slightly smaller than necessary, with only just enough foam used, and that’s it. The sound then travels “around the window.”

Do you have any photos, overview shots from both outside and inside, or of the installation? That might help to provide more insight.

Open wood-glass door leading into the living room; black and brown dog at the entrance.
Thank you. Unfortunately, not for the installation.
Here are some more pictures.

It is also possible that you are simply exposed to different background noises and perceive them as unusually loud, although they are normal.
Wind depending on the weather direction, traffic noise that you did not have before.

I found an old picture. You can see the expanding foam squeezing out at the bottom.
