The topic of cleanliness just before moving in is causing me some concern in several areas. Now the delicate question is how to clean the window panes, after being exposed to construction dust, paint splatters, etc., for months, without damaging them.

This concerns both the interior and exterior. Most of our glass is laminated safety glass (VSG), and two panes are also toughened safety glass (ESG), which is particularly sensitive.

Is there a best practice for the initial cleaning of the glass, both inside and outside? Naturally, the parquet flooring is already laid inside, and the walls are fully painted. Making a mess is therefore out of the question.

What I find worse than the glass panes themselves is cleaning the frames at the bottom on the inside 😡

Hello, I would contact a company that carries out the harvesting. Why bother doing it yourself when you can solve the problem for a fraction of the cost.

In such cases, we simply call the Rümpelmannschaft. At least then we know the job will be done properly. Unfortunately, you can’t always rely on every team you hire. In Düsseldorf, it’s the go-to address within my circle of friends. We have all moved several times. Sometimes because one of us had children, and sometimes because a different area just seemed nicer. You know how it is—families grow, and suddenly you have to look for the best school district. Life used to be easier.

Isn't this the point you tell the window installer—that when packing up or leaving the factory, they should use the extra thick protective film and, after installation, carefully rewrap everything? Of course, it depends on the window, but this way you can save yourself quite a bit of trouble.

Cleaning windows with construction dirt can be a challenging task even for an experienced window cleaner, depending on the level of contamination. Since these are also tempered safety glass (ESG) and laminated safety glass (VSG) panes, as a non-professional, I would recommend using the following materials:

- Bucket of warm water
- Dish soap
- Microfiber cloth
- Plastic or wooden scraper (no metal scraper!)
- Walnut scrub pad
- Several cloths (any material, just to catch the dirty water)

Place the cloths in front of the window to catch the dirty water. Mix the dish soap with the warm water and apply it to the window using the microfiber cloth. Repeat this process until the heavy dirt is removed. Then moisten the pane again and gently rub the remaining dirty spots with the walnut scrub pad (repeat as needed). If there are still stubborn areas that cannot be wiped away, carefully use the plastic or wooden scraper. The same applies to the frame.

Why no metal scraper? Metal scrapers are not suitable for cleaning ESG and VSG glass because the glass is under stress and can shatter!

I hope this is helpful.

Thanks! After the original poster waited for three years, the windows can finally be cleaned…
