Hi,

we are currently in the planning phase for our small wooden house.
Our architect wants to design our staircase according to standard 18065, but this does not match our size preferences.
We want a straight staircase with a length of 250cm (98 inches)... according to the standard, we would have to extend it to at least 290cm (114 inches). The width of 100cm (39 inches) remains unchanged.

Now to our question: Does a staircase in Lower Saxony have to be designed/built according to standard 18065?
In the technical building regulations, I found this paragraph.
Regarding DIN 18065
  • 1.
  • The introduction excludes the application to staircases in residential buildings of building classes 1 and 2 and in apartments.

I could not find a clear answer as to whether I have to comply with the standard.

Excerpt from the Model Building Code:
Building class 1
1a) Detached buildings up to 7 m (23 feet) in height with no more than two occupancy units and a total area of no more than 400 m² (4,300 sq ft)
1b) Detached buildings used for agricultural or forestry purposes
Building class 2) Buildings up to 7 m (23 feet) in height with no more than two occupancy units and a total area of no more than 400 m² (4,300 sq ft)
How tall is your building?

Have you ever walked on such a steep staircase? Even 290cm (114 inches) in length seems too short to me for a straight staircase. Still feels like a ladder.

A straight staircase and a small wooden house don’t fit together in my opinion, because a straight staircase requires space! It’s no coincidence that this type of staircase is rarely found in small houses.

I’m not sure if it is mandatory. To my knowledge, DIN standards are only recommended.

However, with a length of 2.50 meters (8.2 feet) and a room height of 2.50 meters (8.2 feet), the angle is 45 degrees. Going up or down is like a workout, climbing a mountain up and down — possibly on all fours going up and backwards going down. So it’s a challenge that has nothing to do with everyday practicality.

I assume the building authority does not check whether DIN 18065 is being followed. Their focus is more on the legal aspects.

As long as you use it only for yourself, it is unlikely to cause any issues. However, if a child were to fall, the situation would look different. The architect has already pointed you to the standard, so they would be released from liability.

Every space-saving staircase is steeper and still functional. However, it is not comfortable.

Our house is 6.7 meters (22 feet) tall and therefore falls into building class 1.

We are fully aware of the steep staircase.
At the moment, we are renting an old holiday home (gable roof) with a really small space-saving staircase.
