I would like to control our ventilation system using a timer switch. Can you tell me the best way to do this? Are there timer switches (preferably digital solutions) that I can simply place “in front of” the ventilation control without needing an extra power outlet?
Also, can you tell me what the upper box with the digital display in the picture is or what its purpose is?
Please excuse my probably silly questions; I really have little knowledge about building services and electrical systems.

The device labeled "HMD 1" is a heat meter. (Nibe HMD1 NTC)
You can install a timer switch between the step switch and the ventilation system (most likely—but not certain without further information). The best location is probably near the ventilation unit itself. A power supply is usually required and is also the most economical option. You can likely tap directly into the power supply of the step switch.
In my opinion, a device like a Shelly timer would be best suited here, as it offers flexibility and makes reprogramming easier.
However, I fear your skills and knowledge might be too limited to implement this, so I would suggest involving your brother-in-law or another relative who is familiar with this kind of work.
