Hello, unfortunately, I’m not very skilled with electrical matters. So please forgive me if this question seems silly. I understand the difference between a switch and a push button. But if both have a dimming function, is there still a difference? Important: I’m not asking about the electrical wiring or the technical details behind it, but purely about the appearance of the switch/push button!

Thanks for your helpful answers!

Dimmers are usually round rotary knobs that turn the light on at the brightness level it was set to when switched off by pressing the center. Turning the knob left or right adjusts the brightness dimmer or brighter.

Dimmer switches look like regular push-button light switches. The first press turns the light on at the brightness level it was before turning off. Holding the button increases the brightness, releasing and pressing again dims the light.

I’m not an electrician either, but this is how it works for me. Dining table lamps use dimmer knobs, LED bathroom lighting uses push-button dimmers.

Thank you for your explanation! I have gained a better understanding of the topic now. The difference really is between rotary dimmers and push-button dimmers. Are there any reasons to install one type in one room and the other type in a different room?

- different aesthetic requirements
- availability
etc.

I assume you can get a dimming push button designed to look like blinds up/down push buttons. What is your intended application?

In this case, the application is solely lighting (ceiling lights). Hence the question whether there are any recommendations for individual rooms on whether rotary dimmers or push-button dimmers are better.
