ᐅ Ideas and Experiences for Driveways on Building Plots?

Hello everyone,

Does anyone have ideas or personal experience with a driveway from a village road onto a property? The land is about 1–2 meters (3–6 feet) higher than the road, and we are not sure how to plan this best without losing too much space. After the incline, the driveway is completely flat. The width is about 20 meters (65 feet) and the length 30 meters (98 feet). I will attach a picture directly.

Thanks in advance

Earthworks are the most unpredictable cost in house construction and often feel more expensive compared to other tasks. Additionally, soil not only needs to be excavated but also disposed of. You can easily end up paying €5000 or more for 1000 cubic meters (1300 cubic yards), plus transportation fees. Around 1000 cubic meters (1300 cubic yards) is typical for a standard house excavation on a 100 square meter (1100 square feet) plot. So these costs add up quickly.
If the development plan states that you must place your parking area or garage 5 meters (16 feet) away from the street, roughly several thousand cubic meters (several thousand cubic yards) will need to be excavated. Keep in mind: loose soil piled on a truck takes up more volume than undisturbed soil.
Then, you have your parking spot at street level or with a slight slope, but it’s still not at the same height as the house. This means paving work and steps leading up to the house.
Then there’s the expensive retaining wall for your parking area using L-shaped concrete blocks to support the higher ground level of the property.
This won’t be a cheap or easy financial walk in the park.

Okay, thanks for the honest explanation. I think we really need to get advice from someone who can assess this directly.

Just an idea, without knowing the details.
Build the house partially into the slope. Driveway and entrance to the house at street level. Access to the garden then from the upper floor.

The house partly built into the slope.

That is not necessary at all. It can or should be a house on a slab foundation if this information is correct.

Without a site plan and elevation data, I won’t say anything for now.

No, that’s not necessary. I mentioned it as just an idea, a suggestion to consider.
Even if the ground is completely flat on top, this approach can at least partially eliminate the need for a very steep driveway with all its issues and the retaining structures required on a slope. Plus, you don’t lose a portion of the plot that would otherwise be hard to use.

Yes, to assess all of this, a site plan with elevation details is necessary. It's not as if the slope actually extends 10 meters (33 feet) or more.
