Hi everyone,

We have a basement room that is roughly 3x4 meters (10x13 feet) in size. I would like to install shelves up to the ceiling to store everything that accumulates in a household of five people. Many items will be stored in the popular Really-Useful (35L) boxes, but there will definitely be other boxes and objects as well.
  • Do you have good experiences with any shelving systems?
  • Should it be a heavy-duty shelf?
  • Can you recommend any company or brand?
  • Is a corner shelf worth it, or is it better to simply install shelves "around the corner"?

Thanks!

Sounds silly, but in this case I am always a fan of the Ikea Ivar system. Various heights, two depths, and you can often find used pieces. It has been available for almost 50 years, with parts from any purchase year still compatible and usable together. Quite flexible and can always be adjusted easily for clearances from the floor.

In general, corner shelving units, in my opinion, are often not worth it.

For example, a 3 x 4 m (10 x 13 ft) room could look like this:

Grundriss eines Raums mit Regalreihen an beiden Seiten, zentralem Regalblock und Türbogen unten.

In the bottom right corner, there could be strips on the wall to hang devices or similar.

That doesn’t sound silly at all :-) I agree completely. Our metal shelves in the utility room work fine for the ski boots, ice skates, and inline skates, but in the storage cellar we reused the old IVAR shelves that used to be in the rooms. You can easily and quickly adjust the height of a shelf, add one, or remove one. No metal shelving I know of is that flexible, as you usually have to screw things back together first.

Floor plan of an interior space with door arch, wall lines, and blue dimension lines.

Here are the measurements I just took. The baseboard is not included yet. What depth is generally recommended? On the left, the 3.31 m (10 ft 10 in) section is already planned by my wife. No shelves can go there. Maybe something could fit in the middle; otherwise, I’ll put a table there so it’s easier to sort through the boxes :p

Ivar also has the advantage that you can attach hooks to the side panels. You always need hooks for something.

No, it sounds good. I’m definitely an Ivar fan and use those things in every room. Also for storing supplies.
