Hello everyone,

we are currently renovating our house.

Upstairs, we have a 3-4 cm (1¼–1½ inch) cast asphalt screed, and we want to install hardwood flooring on top.

The flooring installer says that since the 50-year-old screed has no sound insulation or similar, he can add 3 mm (1/8 inch) cork as impact sound insulation (about 15 dB impact noise reduction) on top of the screed and then install the hardwood flooring.

My question is, would the hardwood then be installed as a floating floor?

I had thought that glued installation is generally better for reducing impact sound?

Is it possible to glue the hardwood to the cork, and if so, does that make sense in terms of impact sound insulation?

Best regards

Actually, it’s the opposite – a rigid connection to the screed guarantees perfect sound transmission. The idiots above my parents (condominium) did exactly that.

So: trust the floor installer – always floating.
