Hello,
Am I in the right thread for this? It’s not exactly about interior finishing, but it’s somewhat related to ‘breaking through a wall’...
Where would you place a mailbox slot and a doorbell panel at this entrance?

a) Both in their current positions (next to the door handle, a bit hard to see)
b) Both where the black box is drawn
c) Mailbox where the black box is drawn, and doorbell above where the mailbox currently is
The mail slot opens into the office, which can also receive the building’s private mail. Both options would work well inside the office.
With the ‘lower’ placement, it might be a bit tight to ensure mail passes through at a reasonable height inside (floor level inside is the same as the top step outside the front door). Mail shouldn’t just fall loosely on the floor...
The lower option has the advantage that couriers and visitors don’t have to walk up the stairs to deliver mail or ring the doorbell, while the upper one would be fully sheltered under the yet-to-be-installed porch roof. The mixed option would make sense for mail only, since to ring the doorbell you’d need to approach the door anyway...
Thanks for your opinions!

The mailbox might be practical down there, but I would place the doorbell panel somewhere where you can stand dry while speaking through the intercom.

I would keep the doorbell close to the door. Having it on the front wall might encourage kids to play pranks by ringing it while passing by. Anyone who wants to ring at your place has to walk up the stairs anyway.
I would also keep the mailbox there unless the mail would otherwise fall on the floor in your office. I wouldn’t want to bend down every day for that. From an energy efficiency perspective, is it still sensible to have a slot-type mailbox? Are there special types for this, or does it really mean having an uninsulated hole in the wall? Nowadays, this is usually avoided because it wastes heating energy.

It's about 3m (10 feet) from the street, but you’re absolutely right, especially since I’d probably first walk to the door and then look for the doorbell anyway 😉
I would also leave the mailbox there if the mail would otherwise fall onto the office floor? No, I’d put a mail bin directly there (yes, it would stand under the desk, on the floor)...
I wouldn’t want to bend down every day for that. And I wouldn’t want to always have to go outside first to check if there’s mail (yes, there are also technical gadgets for that, but we don’t want to overdo it 😉)
Is it really energy-efficient to keep having a slot mailbox? Are there special boxes for that, or do you really have an uninsulated hole in the wall? These days that’s usually avoided because it wastes heating energy. That’s a very good point—I’ve heard there are insulated solutions, but of course that is a major consideration during planning!
Especially if, in the worst case, cold drafts came in at floor level—that’s a no-go!
