Hello everyone,

We are building with 17cm Ytong blocks (7 inches) and 12cm insulation (5 inches) to meet the KfW55 standard. For the planned floor-to-ceiling windows, we have been offered (expensive!) steel brackets mounted on the outside of the house wall, to which the French balconies / fall protection will be attached.
- Isn’t there a more affordable and aesthetically pleasing solution? Do you have any ideas? Links are welcome ;-).
The alternative would be to use windows with a fixed lower part 🙄

Thank you very much and best regards from Stuttgart!

You’re saying it yourself. Windows with security features.

They just don’t look nearly as nice as floor-to-ceiling windows with a balconette. But I really can’t imagine there isn’t another solution!?

How far along are you with your build, and do you still have the option to change the wall construction? The current one combines the disadvantages of aerated concrete blocks with those of an external insulation system, offering little labor savings for the builder and no other benefits. This is the kind of result you get.

Not at all – the shell structure is complete. Since the lot is very narrow, we looked into what KfW55 offers with the smallest possible wall thickness (30cm (12 inches)). Although we bought it with floor-to-ceiling windows, we are now being told "It’s not that simple and will be much, much more expensive."

If the floor-to-ceiling windows were already included in the contract, that is initially not your problem. Floor-to-ceiling windows definitely require fall protection. If the general contractor forgot to include the fastening of this protection in their calculations, that is their problem.

Or did you handle all the contracts yourselves?

Best regards,

Andreas
