ᐅ Outdoor Staircase / Stairway to Bungalow

Hello everyone, we are currently facing a problem. Our bungalow was built into a slope, so our basement is at ground level. We have two entrance doors. The first leads into the basement plus a separate apartment, and the second leads into the bungalow above.

Now we are desperately looking for a solution to access the first floor (bungalow). The house has more of a country style, so a metal staircase—I’ve already had a few designs on the table—looked like a fire escape. Wood is basically not an option for us due to the high maintenance required.

Does anyone have ideas on how best to design or plan the staircase to reach the first floor? We have also considered a prefabricated concrete staircase with a landing, but we haven’t made much progress here.

Suggestions with pictures are very welcome.

Thank you very much!

What does the building permit / planning application say about the exterior staircase? Is there a development plan?

How is the staircase supposed to run? Are there any sketches or drawings with the measurements included?

I would go for a steel structure. However, it will always look somewhat like a makeshift solution, as it might block the “pretty” entrance door below.

I could also imagine a wrap-around porch or balcony structure at the front of the house, with the stairs placed in a spot where they don't block the entrance below as much.

If a country house style is desired, in my opinion, you hardly can avoid (white-painted?) wood. Metal tends to look too industrial, especially in combination with this house.

Where is the granny flat located – top left or top right? This is important for positioning a staircase with a veranda so that it doesn’t pass in front of your windows. It’s really challenging. Even for a spiral staircase, which requires less space and is directly by the front doors, the space probably isn’t sufficient.

Neither. The original poster writes:

"The first one leads to the basement + granny flat, and the second leads to the bungalow above."

So, downstairs.

Sorry – I misread that.
