Hello everyone,

we would like to build a carport attached to our house. The carport should measure 8.64 x 5.67 meters (28.3 x 18.6 feet), with approximately 3 x 5.67 meters (9.8 x 18.6 feet) of that space used for a storage shed. We plan to attach the carport to the house wall and have already prepared the necessary mounting beams for this purpose.

Does anyone have recommendations on which materials are best suited for the carport? Are there any reputable suppliers you would suggest?

Best regards

Look at your house and decide between wood or aluminum!
More specifically: if you have a red Scandinavian-style house or a log cabin, I recommend wood.
If you have a modern house, possibly with anthracite-colored windows, I would choose aluminum in your place.

How much are you willing to spend?

With wood, keep in mind that it needs to be treated again every few years. On the plus side, it looks great (in my opinion). A piece crafted by a professional carpenter is not comparable to one from a hardware store, which is why I’m asking about your budget.

(PS: Especially for modern white and anthracite-colored houses, I find wood to be a real visual delight)

There are countless suppliers for carports. We will most likely order ours from Prikker, as they are one of the more affordable providers offering tiled roofs. I find wood very suitable for DIY projects, and it matches almost any house. However, I would avoid using KDI wood if possible (toxic waste).

The house is planned with a single-color base coat (white) and gray/anthracite windows.
Depending on the remaining budget after handover, we will either clad the lower part of the house with wood or paint it with a second color (sand/beige, something along those lines).

Is the choice of material purely an aesthetic decision?
I have read several reports about wood starting to develop mold. Therefore, I assume that aluminum is "more durable." Is that correct?
Does aluminum have any disadvantages compared to wood, apart from the visual aspect?
I suspect it will generally be more expensive, right?

We are considering connecting the front door canopy directly to the carport. Ideally, we would find a supplier who installs/offers both the carport and the front door canopy.
I assume this would only be possible with aluminum, correct?

Aluminum is naturally more resistant to moisture but is also more expensive and less suitable for DIY projects. However, wood usually does not mold; a carport is well-ventilated, and the wood is typically coated with a protective finish. Wood only molds if the construction is done poorly. For example, the posts must not be set directly in the ground, etc.

A custom structure with a house-style roof can be made by any carpenter, although you can expect significant additional costs for both wood and aluminum if you want anything other than standard dimensions.
