ᐅ Flush interior doors – any experiences?

Hello everyone,

I am currently considering which type of interior doors to install in my new build. I came across flush or wall-aligned doors. I have done some research but found very little concrete information or user experience. I especially like wall-aligned doors for their aesthetics, as I appreciate simplicity and subtlety, and they greatly enhance the overall room impression. Therefore, I would like to use such doors. I understand that they are somewhat more expensive than standard doors. My questions are:
  • Are these doors still uncommon, or have they become standard practice?
  • Are there any requirements to consider during the rough construction phase?
  • What would you estimate is the additional cost of a flush or wall-aligned door compared to a door with a standard frame? Including purchase price plus installation costs.
  • Besides the price, are there any other reasons against using these doors?
If these doors are not an option because of the price or other reasons, I would at least consider stop-beveled doors, probably with a magnetic latch...

Thanks for your experiences and input!

Which suppliers can you recommend for flush interior doors with concealed frames that offer a good price-performance ratio?

This sounds to me like a trick question, since first, for a luxury product, the price-performance ratio works almost the opposite to that of everyday products due to competitive pressure, so such a ratio can only be "relative" at best; and second, in this market segment there is also strong "social control," meaning a supplier cannot afford to be either outrageously expensive or deliver poor quality.

I see the issue coming from the point where your question is imprecise: “flush” with what (a plastered or tiled masonry or drywall wall, a wood paneling, ...)? And “concealed”—does this mean the frame is invisible only from the room side, or also from the hallway and/or the door casing side?

I hope you understand why your question sounds like a non-expert in wine ordering the “finest vintage” the waiter can offer.

Thank you for your response. I am interested in a flush interior door with a concealed frame on one side of the door.

It is clear that this is an expensive version of a door, but I am looking for recommendations for suppliers of this type. Unfortunately, there are also expensive doors of poor quality. That is why I am asking you for recommendations. Thank you very much!

Which suppliers of flush interior doors with hidden frames and a good price-performance ratio can you recommend?

None. We briefly considered it as well. My wife knows these doors from her office and fell in love with the look. However, after a fairly brief research, the topic was dropped because the prices are quite high. A carpenter explained to me that, on one hand, extremely precise construction work is required, and on the other hand, the fittings must be of the highest quality to ensure that the gaps are consistent and precise—and stay that way. The question is roughly like asking for an affordable but high-performance Formula 1 race car. 🙂
We filed this under “dreams only millionaires can afford.”

Exactly. That’s what makes the question about an affordable Rolls or Cartier dealer so amusing.

And that’s why it makes a huge difference whether the interior carpenter delivering the doors is also the one installing the wall cladding. Conversely, the idea of sourcing the doors separately is a prime candidate for the Hall of Blame. In this sense, your answer

unfortunately remains critically imprecise.

P.S.: I’m currently reading your other question

We are currently planning an additional floor on a house with many glass facades and are looking for a modern option for the exterior cladding. We really like Trespa facade panels, for example.

From this, I understand that it concerns an existing building into which the entire area needs to fit. Usually, you can still apply for an additional approval to implement such high-end details. Besides that, I strongly recommend starting a separate overall project thread where you present the building along with the usual overview plans showing the current state, the desired state, and the extension.
