Manatarms1235 Apr 2023 11:22Hello,
I need your help regarding the network cabinet.
I want a 19-inch wall-mounted network cabinet.
We will have a cable connection provided by Vodafone.
Which depth would you recommend, 40 or 45 cm (16 or 18 inches)? I won’t need a 60 cm (24 inches) depth.
What height would you recommend? 6, 7, 9, or 12 rack units (U)?
Our CAT7 cables all come into the basement with keystone jacks.
What currently needs to go into the network cabinet:
1x 24-port patch panel with keystone openings
1x 16-port switch
1x Fritzbox 6660 or 6690
1x power strip
What else might be added to the network cabinet later?
We will also have satellite TV; 4 satellite cables come from the roof to the basement, and then 5 satellite cables go from the basement to the rooms.
Can we also neatly integrate the satellite distribution into the network cabinet, or should that be handled separately?

If space allows, I would go for a depth of 45cm (18 inches) and 12 rack units (12U).
At the front, some depth is lost because the devices are mounted recessed to make room for the patch cables. A depth of 60cm (24 inches) would be more suitable for a rack-mounted NAS or server. I don’t think you’ll be using something like that, right?
What else might you add in the future? A second small switch with PoE or PoE injectors? A small NAS to place inside? It’s better to have space than to need it later!
Including a satellite dish? No idea. For a new build nowadays, I would probably leave it out since linear TV is hardly used anymore here. But everyone has different needs and preferences.

Would 9U already be quite tight?

We still watch quite a bit of linear TV, especially for sports events like football.

Daniel_935 Apr 2023 13:41I would also recommend the 45 cm (18 inches) depth. You can fit your listed components in 4 rack units, but something always gets added later.
In the end, the question is how much space you have for the cabinet; the costs don’t have a huge impact anyway. I would definitely go with 9 rack units to allow for expansion.
For the satellite cabling, I would prefer to put it in a small mounting box next to the network cabinet. It looks much neater and is easier to handle on a mounting plate.

I often have to work in and on these sub-distribution boards. You really appreciate every additional installation space! Sometimes you can only reach around from the front with one hand to grab a newly installed cable and pull it forward, etc. Especially if you can’t open these small distribution boxes from the sides (for example, because they don’t have removable side panels or some fool installed them in a corner ;-)

Manatarms1235 Apr 2023 17:14Thank you for your messages.
In our utility room, we have space between two pipes for the network cabinet.
The space is about 75cm (30 inches) wide and around 90 to maybe 100cm (35 to 39 inches) high.
So you would recommend a depth of 45cm (18 inches)?
You already advised against 7U. What would be better for us, 9U or 12U?
It shouldn’t be too large either.
The Fritzbox 6690 also requires a fair amount of space due to its upright design.
What type of mounting box would you recommend for satellite?
