ᐅ Installing a suspended ceiling without using counter battens?

I need your help again:
In my newly built house, I hired a drywall contractor to install a dropped ceiling on the ground floor because we want to have LED spotlights there. I told him that I want to lose as little height as possible and therefore the ceiling should only be lowered as much as necessary.
Today, I checked the initial work and noticed that the contractor skipped using a counter battens and only installed the primary battens directly into the suspension hangers.
Now I am wondering if this is really a good idea and technically correct? I have uploaded a photo.

The craftsman is doing exactly what you want. A building “expert” might have some doubts, but I did it this way myself, for example.
So everything is fine.

Of course, you can do it that way. That's exactly what direct hangers are designed for.
The important thing is to install the wiring for the spotlights before fitting the drywall panels.

And take the installation height of the LED spots into account. There are also relatively deep LED spots.
