ᐅ Cladding Concrete Stairs with Tiles, Vinyl, or Wood Flooring?

Hello everyone,

The general contractor is asking us to choose the thickness of the stair covering so they can plan the concrete staircase accordingly.
They said that if we use wood, the stair covering would be 5 cm (2 inches) thick, while tiles would be about 1 cm (0.4 inches).

We like the wood look, but the price difference is very high (an additional cost of 9,000 EUR compared to tiles for 48 straight steps).

I’m wondering why there is such a large price difference. Is it because of the material cost due to the thickness difference, or the installation effort?

Do we really need to use such a thick stair covering for parquet/wood? Couldn’t we just install regular parquet (or vinyl) directly on the concrete stairs since the concrete itself is already stable?

Have you already had that done? Does it look good?
Our builder never offered to cover the stairs with hardwood flooring. I’m not sure about that either, since the covering is quite thin. Would it then be installed flush, so mitred at the edges?
I think I have a different look in mind, so I’m curious whether that will be possible for us.
We will probably choose a different wood color for the stair treads to avoid clashing with the hardwood flooring.

You’re not doing yourself any favors with your fragmented questions. There are people here whose experience could warn you in time against a brilliantly over-engineered McMansion nightmare.

No, it hasn't been implemented yet; unfortunately, we’re not that far along. But it’s apparently quite common, as the specialist store told us.
I wanted it without overhangs, whether with or without hardwood flooring. It will look like in the picture.

We ordered extra parquet flooring so it could also be installed on the stairs for a consistent look. We received advice from a specialist retailer.

Was it just regular parquet, or do you also need an underlayment? The advisor at the specialist retailer told us that some kind of underlayment is needed to increase the thickness.
I didn’t really understand why this underlayment is necessary. I think if the concrete steps are done properly, it shouldn’t be needed.

He also mentioned that they offer prefabricated stair treads (like those shown in this photo) and the price is always the same for the 3 options. They looked thick, so I thought it would be similar to solid wood block steps.

The carpenter wants to cut the edges mitered because he also thinks the edges are expensive.

The first one in the photo looks mitered, right? I’m not sure if it’s really different from the other versions with a projecting stair nose (in terms of price).

I have done some research and I see some aluminum profiles used for stair edges. I am not sure if that would be a good solution (both visually and functionally), but I think it would be cheaper.

I’m not sure I understood you correctly, but I haven’t received many details from the general contractor yet. It was mainly about the height of the concrete stair steps. Why do you suspect a McMansion nightmare here?

We haven’t installed it yet; so far, we have only purchased the hardwood flooring. There was no mention of special underlay material. The flooring will be glued directly onto the step as usual, so the build-up height on the step will only be the thickness of the hardwood flooring itself.

Where are you in your construction process? Is the concrete staircase already in place?
Or are you still in the planning phase and can still make adjustments?
