ᐅ Remove the tile floor or install parquet/vinyl flooring over it?

Hello everyone,

I raised this topic in another thread, but it seems more appropriate here. I wanted to get an idea of whether it’s feasible to install hardwood flooring over tiles (I wouldn’t do it myself, since I have no experience with this) or if the tiles need to be removed first. I have read that it is possible, but I’m wondering how the transition to the kitchen, which is tiled, or to the hallway works, and whether door trimming would need to be considered. Also, the tiles aren’t perfectly level—I haven’t measured, but there appear to be slight unevenness, and in the middle, the screed seems to have settled a bit (see photo).

What should I expect to pay per square meter (if the tile floor can stay)? I wouldn’t choose expensive hardwood; I’ve seen some nice options around 50 euros/m² (about 4.65 USD/ft²).

Also, upstairs we plan to replace the carpet with hardwood or vinyl flooring (I lean toward hardwood since it can be sanded). The carpet can be removed quite easily, but only the pile; underneath remains a layer (either adhesive or foam). Can flooring be installed over that, or does it need to be completely sanded off?

Thanks in advance and best regards,

Hubi

@Wilhelm2022 be careful not to damage the screed while doing this... maybe you can also rent a grinder for the adhesive. The tiles themselves came off quite easily for me using a basic rotary hammer with a tile chisel.

All right, good tip... yes, that would be better than damaging the screed. I’ll see if I can rent a milling machine.

I'm bringing this topic back up because we're facing a similar issue:

We plan to install tiles in the entrance area/hallway and parquet flooring in the living-dining-kitchen area. Currently, there are "stylish" brown tiles everywhere (condition is very good but unattractive) – there is underfloor heating throughout.

The tiler (who will also fully glue down the parquet) said he would leave the existing tiles in place and level them using tile adhesive and parquet adhesive. The current tiles are about 25cm x 25cm (10 inches x 10 inches). On top of them, 60cm x 60cm (24 inches x 24 inches) tiles and parquet planks approximately 200cm (79 inches) long will be installed.

Can this work? He was confident, but I am skeptical.

This is what the tiled floor looks like …….
Empty living room with brown floor tiles, window on the left, open door to the kitchen with refrigerator.

Large window with light lace curtain, view of the garden; radiator under the windowsill.

It would be great if someone could share their input. Thanks 🙂

Regardless of whether it works or not: The underfloor heating loses efficiency due to the additional layer. With tiles on tiles, at least I know it works without any problems—I have already done this myself.
