Hello forum community,

Could you please take a look at the pictures of our roof structure?

To us, it doesn’t look good at all.

The rafters show significant warping and are far from flush at the ridge area.

This also causes the purlins, which according to the structural engineer should be nailed, to not sit properly against the rafters. In some places, the gaps are as wide as a hand.

Additionally, some nails have not been fully driven in.

Our question is whether this could still be within an acceptable tolerance or if it should already be considered professionally incorrect work?

Thanks in advance!

Was this done by a professional company? Is it still nailed today?
Here, screws are used.

On the other hand, you always get what you pay for...

That's correct, however: Even if the price was very low, from the photos it seems that the construction was not done according to the currently valid regulations. I'm not a carpenter, though! The ridge beam is more like a toothpick; forces that should be transferred to the opposing rafters end up dissipated. There are usually nailing diagrams for collar ties/braces, etc. Still, despite the alarming appearance, it might fall within acceptable tolerances 🙄

We are building with a general contractor. The subcontractor hired is a carpenter, so I assume it is a professional company.
From what I gathered, the site manager is supposed to conduct the inspection today. Therefore, nailing is probably no longer being done. However, according to the structural engineer, only nailing should be used. We have already informed our site manager that this does not look professionally done to us.

It already looks a bit adventurous, and I’m also wondering why the rafters don’t align if the roof is supposed to be flat...

The collar ties don’t provide any lateral support, but the beams should be able to carry the load over a long period of time.

Don’t you have your own expert? I assume the site manager mentioned was hired by the general contractor?
I’m not very familiar with roofs, but my roof truss looked quite crooked to me as well, and the expert I hired found no issues.
Let me look for the pictures... here:

So it’s also crooked, but different from yours and with no gaps. Definitely get an independent expert who isn’t connected to the general contractor or their subcontractors and represents only your interests!
