Hello everyone,
my partner and I have found a plot of land over 1,700 sqm (18,300 sq ft) with an old bungalow and outbuildings that we like. The price is also reasonable for the size. During the inspection, we discovered that there is a bunker from before World War II located roughly in the middle of the plot, underneath one of the outbuildings. Our plan is to fully renovate or demolish and rebuild the bungalow at a later stage in order to rent it out. The bungalow is located at the front of the property, next to the street. Behind it, presumably above the bunker (there are no building plans, and no one knows exactly where it begins and ends), we would like to build a new single-family house to enjoy the beautiful, unobstructed view of the trees at the back of the property and to have privacy. I haven’t found any information online about whether it is possible to build a new house over an old bunker. Does anyone here have experience with this and can offer advice or answer my question?

Bunker as a basement. Cool idea 🙂
I’m not familiar with this. But demolishing the bunker is probably not an option due to cost.

I would really like to have a find like that. As Rick already mentioned, it could definitely be used as a basement or something similar.

How well is the bunker still intact?
Here, former munitions storage sites from WWII have bunkers that are partly at risk of collapse (there were attempts to demolish them after WWII). Some were simply filled in so that the land could eventually be built on—or to cheaply dispose of the demolition debris—while others have had buildings added on or converted on top of the bunkers. Demolishing the intact structures would likely be very difficult and a financial nightmare.
Since new houses are being built on old cellars, in my understanding, this should also be possible on a bunker.

Where is that one user who was worried about neighbors suddenly turning violent and looting due to widespread supply shortages?
That would be a dream come true for him—then he could just close his bunker door and eat his tons of canned food :-)

That should be Steven (I’ll skip tagging him—let sleeping dogs lie 😉 ).
