Hello,

It would be really great if everyone here could just post one or a few pictures showing the current state of their house.

I'll start right away.

For renovations, it’s best to provide a comparison of before and after the remodeling.

After May 2015:

Thank you very much, we’re complete beginners and have taught ourselves everything. It’s good to hear that. I just never want to stuff hemp (in any form) into anything again or touch drywall panels xD but that will still take some time.

I can’t wait to continue raising the wooden walls. That’s actually fun.

I totally get you! We inherited the house from my husband’s grandmother and have been renovating the upper floor for almost four years now to use it as a holiday apartment. 😀 The brother lives on the ground floor and finished his renovation two years ago. The house is 400 km (250 miles) away from where we live, so we can only work on it during long weekends and holidays. We had planned so much for this vacation. And we probably completed about 10%? and ended up creating new construction issues instead. Instead of finally redoing the floors in the children’s rooms and renovating the old casement windows, we had to excavate an old soakaway pit that was about to collapse. And repave the courtyard. And to do that, have a tree cut down. It all started with the brother’s seemingly innocent remark: “I wouldn’t park there, there’s a strange new dip with a crack that seems to be getting worse.”

By the way, the built-in shelf in the bathroom was removed halfway through the work because we, meaning my husband, didn’t want to cut the tiles for it. Hang in there. In five years, half of the hardship will be forgotten.

I’m truly sympathizing with you all right now... but as I’ve said before, don’t get discouraged. I’ve asked many people when their houses were actually finished after moving in. And so many of them were still working on landscaping, interior fittings, and other things years later.

We actually did quite a bit of “quick and dirty” work in the rental apartments upstairs because the deadline was fixed. But my own utility room still isn’t finished after a year! (So my washer-dryer is still in my nephew’s apartment next door ;-) )

I can completely relate to the issue of starting new projects just because a better idea for here or there keeps coming up...

Maybe we really should just take a whole weekend off and go to the seaside? We had to do that ourselves from time to time because at some point we reached a stage where we were completely exhausted (and frustrated) 😉

@Holzhäuschen,

I really hope you can enjoy your house soon. I’m still deeply impressed by what you’re accomplishing. And yes, your updates are top-notch and ... entertaining as well, thank you for that. It’s nice that at least here we’re not arguing about cents and gas prices.

I never thought I would be posting in this thread again, but here we are. 🙂
Last week, our foundation slab was poured, and this week the bricklayers have started.
It’s quite exciting to watch. With a ring beam and things like that – you don’t usually need that in flat Lower Saxony.

Construction site with yellow YTONG blocks, construction workers, houses on a slope, orange construction machine.

Wow, you’ve really moved quickly with your project.

Do you have a thread somewhere where I can read more about what you’re building now?

I used to have a floor plan discussion thread. However, I stopped updating it at some point.
In the end, we chose almost exactly the floor plan that wasn’t very popular in the thread back then. We still really like it. In the end, it’s a matter of personal taste. I can start a project thread this evening with some pictures of the planning.
