Hello,

we are considering adding a security camera at the front door or garage.

The camera should be connected to Wi-Fi but wired to the power supply.

Which models would you recommend?
The cameras should have a spotlight or floodlight,
and they should only record when motion is detected and be able to distinguish between people, cars, and animals.

I have found the following cameras:

Ring, Eufy, Netatmo, Reolink, Nest

Which ones would you recommend?
Feel free to suggest other options.

I am currently using Logitech Circle View cameras and am very satisfied with them, but they have no light and only limited IR range. However, they support HomeKit Secure Video, which is unfortunately still not available with the Netatmo floodlight camera. If HKSV is not important, I can personally recommend both the Netatmo and the Eve outdoor cameras.

Now, if only someone would finally release a HKSV camera with PoE, I would be completely happy 😉

Take a look at Arlo. I have had good experiences with it. It was used during the construction phase.

Sorry to say this, but I consider surveillance cameras connected via Wi-Fi to be toys... If the cameras are supposed to transmit high-resolution images, you will receive several megabytes with every small movement. A reasonably good image is about 300-400 KB. Depending on the sensitivity of the camera and the number of cameras, that can add up to several hundred megabytes or even a gigabyte per day. Additionally, keep in mind that the Wi-Fi signal for outdoor cameras can be limited depending on the distance from the router and the thickness of the exterior wall.

I have repeatedly tested cameras connected via Wi-Fi, and it was always unreliable. Now, all cameras are on a wired LAN. Since they stream to a server, I still notice bandwidth loss, especially when I have video conferences myself...

This is probably not about proper surveillance.
If it’s meant to be part of a security system, the cameras should be wired.
Cameras with people detection, etc., do not trigger when a bush moves.
Motion detection alone has also improved significantly.
There is also fast and stable Wi-Fi. With proper planning, transmission is not an issue. However, there is no real security because it can be easily disrupted.
We have over 30 4K cameras recording continuously at high frame rates and analyzing the footage. Our network is still underutilized.
So it’s more likely an issue with your network 😉

So if the 30 cameras send their recordings via the internet to an external server and are still underutilized, do you have fiber optic, backbone connection, or what?
