Hello,

we are wondering on which side of the door is the best option to install a video doorbell.
I have attached our floor plan of the entrance area.

There is the option to mount it either on the right side of the front door on the protrusion or on the left side next to the door on the wall.
Which option would you say is better?

A simple Ring, Nest, or Eufy doorbell is planned.

Hello Alex!

I would probably prefer the right side, as it is directly in front of the projection. Visitors would then stand at some distance in front of the front door, instead of being right up against the door (...or the open bathroom window 😉)
The camera's "overview" would likely be better as well.

Hello netuser,

Thank you very much for your message.
The right side of the wall projection was also our first thought, but after thinking about it for weeks we are still unsure.

Did you notice that the wall projection is only 30cm (12 inches) deep? You would probably have to use a corner bracket because most people tend to stand directly in front of the doorbell out of habit, and then they would be standing right next to the door again.

On the left side of the door, a corner bracket could also be used (we would need to check the angle) so that the doorbell faces centrally towards the front door and people would then stand more or less centrally in front of the door with some distance.

Maybe I am just seeing this wrong or exaggerating. (It’s hard for me to imagine how it will actually look in the end.)

At the moment, we are really uncertain about what to do. We don’t want to regret putting the doorbell on the wrong side later on 😀

When standing in front of the door, the door handle is on the right side (you can also see this on the floor plan and how the door opens).

In my experience, using a battery-powered one works well, so there is no need for a power supply from the house.

This also makes it very easy to test the final location with the same doorbell before attaching it to the exterior wall with two small screws.

I didn’t quite understand that. Do you mean “standing directly in front of the DOOR…”? Otherwise, from my perspective, wouldn’t that actually support the argument for the right side?

The doorbell on the right, operated with the right hand (most people are right-handed), and then the visitor just stands normally in front or centered by the door? At least that’s how I imagine it. A camera with a 180° angle would still capture everything sufficiently, and the visitor would stand at a reasonable distance in front of the door.

This year, we installed a video intercom system.
Our door opens the opposite way, and the video doorbell is on the right side due to the retrofit.
At the moment, it’s mainly my child’s friends who ring the bell. They tend to move toward the door handle (which is on the left side of the door) right after ringing, so they’re not always visible on the video. This might be a habit since we’ve always opened the door immediately before.

For that reason, I would lean toward placing it on the right side for you. The only question is whether to position it facing straight onto the protrusion or on the side of the protrusion.
