ᐅ Side-by-side refrigerator/freezer units are now rarely seen without an ice maker.

We are considering getting a new kitchen in the next few years. For that, we want to install a separate side-by-side fridge/freezer unit. While browsing, it feels like about 80% of the models come with an ice cube dispenser. I seriously wonder who constantly needs ice cubes? I don’t know anyone—literally no one in my entire circle of friends and family—who uses ice cubes, and that’s been the case for over 40 years. So why do so many models have these features? If you don’t want one, the selection drops drastically. Another issue is that the new location wouldn’t have a water connection, which I assume is needed for the dispenser?
Does anyone here have one of these dispensers, and how often do you use it? Is it really something that improves your life, or just nonsense that gets dirty and sits unused?

I wouldn’t choose Haier as a device to buy; it’s all Vestel, which is the worst junk I know... In general, or perhaps regarding older times and models, you might be right, but the mentioned model is hardly inferior to the more expensive “brand name” models. At least we were very positively surprised by both the perceived quality and the features themselves. Not to mention the price-performance ratio. Of course, everyone is free to spend their 5000 EUR (about 5400 USD) on Liebherr or similar 😉
… especially since I know a rather “funny” story about this manufacturer and the specialist trade. Someone wanted to spend a lot of money and only buy from specialist dealers. When the large fridge broke down just a week later, it wasn’t so funny anymore…
That’s just one example, of course 🙂
There are whisky connoisseurs (and yes, I mean single malt) who swear that adding water (or ice) brings out completely different flavors. Of course, they recommend using spring water, not something like Berliner Rohrperle.
I have another suggestion: a large-capacity refrigerator and a large-capacity freezer. However, I’m not sure if either is available in the 50cm (20 inches) width you need.
We currently have this setup, and at least with the freezer (which was the main issue), I’m not sure how to fill it up completely. The refrigerator often gets full, but honestly, I no longer remember what’s in the second vegetable drawer (I think it mainly holds manuals and small items), and we will still get more space when the old standalone unit from the apartment arrives.

Of course, this is just one example 🙂 That may be true, with Liebherr you do get Liebherr quality, but as far as I know, they don’t make side-by-side models (though I haven’t researched that thoroughly). We decided on the LG because, for the price, it offered exactly what we wanted: a fixed water connection, ice, no divider bar inside the fridge.
Smeg, for example, is a manufacturer where under the panel you’ll find a Gorenje device costing around 700 EUR, which sells as a Smeg design for over 2000 EUR just because it has a bit of color.

I initially had an LG (French Door) in mind for almost twice the price but ended up choosing a Haier. Not just because of the price. So far, we have no regrets and don’t miss anything at all 😉
We deliberately did not want water and ice included, even if they were free 🙂

We purposely didn’t want water and ice dispensers even if they came free 🙂How is the noise level? Is the appliance placed in an open-plan living area or more in a separate kitchen?K a t j a schrieb:
