ᐅ Side-by-side refrigerator/freezer units are now rarely seen without an ice maker.

We are considering getting a new kitchen in the next few years. For that, we want to install a separate side-by-side fridge/freezer unit. While browsing, it feels like about 80% of the models come with an ice cube dispenser. I seriously wonder who constantly needs ice cubes? I don’t know anyone—literally no one in my entire circle of friends and family—who uses ice cubes, and that’s been the case for over 40 years. So why do so many models have these features? If you don’t want one, the selection drops drastically. Another issue is that the new location wouldn’t have a water connection, which I assume is needed for the dispenser?
Does anyone here have one of these dispensers, and how often do you use it? Is it really something that improves your life, or just nonsense that gets dirty and sits unused?

I think the doors can be opened independently as well... but maybe a 70cm (28 inch) wide model of a stand-alone fridge-freezer combination would make sense. Combined, just one door, wider, and a practical layout with the freezer at the bottom and the fridge on top. That’s what we have now, and my husband is unhappy with the storage space in the freezer compartment. 🙄N

We are getting a side-by-side unit in a month. We were often advised not to get one with a direct water connection since there have been frequent issues reported. This advice came from both the plumber and the kitchen fitter who is building our kitchen. That’s why we are choosing one with a water tank. We are in our 40s and have been using ice cubes for 20 years, mostly on weekends for whiskey, but sometimes otherwise as well. The brand will be Samsung. They offer good discounts through Corporate Benefits.

My husband also drinks whiskey. But he thinks adding ice is a sin. 😉It depends on how and which whiskey you drink. I've already tried whiskey over €100 with cold whiskey stones. It’s not really my thing. That’s why I’m more of a simple whiskey drinker. Mostly Grant’s with cola and ice :-)

So why do so many appliances have these features? It’s like with many things: the mainstream wants hardwood flooring because “everyone” has it (Pinterest?), and then wonders why you see grease and water stains. (Oops, open-pored, what is that?)
We have a French door refrigerator from Haier with an 80cm (31.5 inches) width: affordable, efficient, and equipped with several drawers for all kinds of refrigerated goods. The freezer compartment’s capacity (two drawers plus 3 internal drawers) was convincing. You can keep the left door closed if you’re not reaching for vegetables.
Thanks to @kbt09 for the tip about “French door” from years ago.
@K a t j a ... if you currently have a 70cm (28 inch) wide appliance, you should definitely take a look at side-by-side refrigerators in person. You will probably be a bit surprised at how narrow the fridge/freezer compartments are compared to your 70cm (28 inch) wide appliance. Also, when it comes to the freezer section, consider what you usually store, for example, a large fish or something similar... will that fit in a side-by-side refrigerator?
