ᐅ Photovoltaics at Any Cost – Current Situation and Available Options

Hello everyone,
After countless rejections due to overload, availability, and delivery issues, I have finally received an offer for a photovoltaic system.
The system is planned for our new build (completion in 2023). We have a gable roof, almost south-facing, with a 30-degree pitch, fully usable, about 50 sqm (540 sq ft) of roof area per side.
The house is being built in Bavaria, about 60 km (37 miles) from Thuringia.
The offer surprised me a bit. The following items are included:
14x MAXEON modules at 430 W each, heat pump system, totaling 6.02 kWp - €11,138
1x Tesla Powerwall 2.0, 13.5 kWh - €10,400
Installation, etc. - €3,130
Total: €24,668 net
I find that quite expensive. I would leave out the battery anyway, but even then, I think the price for the 6 kWp system is too high. Apparently, this is currently the price you pay in Bavaria if you can find someone at all. For me, the question is whether it even makes sense to invest right now or just pay for electricity. Of course, it’s a matter of calculation, but if you follow the discussions here, those prices seem sky-high — or not?
Is it better to get offers from other regions? Are there any recommendations around the 97XXX area?

xMisterDx8 Aug 2022 01:11As I have often mentioned before... whoever buys or orders now at sky-high prices will need sky-high electricity prices for it to pay off within a reasonable time.
However, this is not expected; prices will normalize. They have to normalize, because with gas at 30 cents/kWh and electricity at 60 cents/kWh, the situation in Germany is basically unsustainable. That would mean the end of the industrial sector and consequently the end of our entire economic system...
And that brings us back to the market... Sellers of gas, coal, and oil want to sell and therefore have no interest in their customers going bankrupt...
You can imagine it a bit like the stock market... in the end, more and more people jump in to make a quick profit... and then the crash follows...

Personally, I believe that photovoltaic systems don’t necessarily have to be “profitable.” Our house isn’t financially profitable either. Neither is a new car.
We will soon generate our own electricity – how cool is that? – and enough to supply the entire street on good days.
A smart meter will also be installed, allowing me to see at any time how much energy is consumed in our household and how much of it we produce ourselves. A delight for the tech nerd in me.

And then not everyone will be able to afford it, which is not good for the energy transition.
So, full-black systems and storage can be luxury products. I think photovoltaics should be profitable for everyone at first. But usually, they are.

As I've said many times before... anyone buying or ordering now at sky-high prices will also need sky-high electricity prices for it to be worthwhile within a reasonable timeframe.Offer for 28 kWp + 10 kWh storage, all in at €92,000 gross,
and you probably won’t believe it, there’s a profitability calculation included at the end.
I’m definitely waiting until prices return to normal.

Our house isn't financially profitable either. Neither is a new car. If you already have the gravel lying around, sure.
I would have to take out a loan or refinance for that, now at the usual 4-5% interest rates (a personal loan or refinancing is always significantly higher than the mortgage interest for the main loan). And with the current sky-high prices, it might only pay off in 15 or 20 years, because a lot of interest will accumulate.
I would argue that 90% of homeowners have solar panels on their roofs because they hope it will eventually be financially worthwhile.
Not simply because it’s cool to produce your own electricity, no matter the cost.
And then comes the frustrating part:
A forum like this is actually meant to give people realistic assessments of whether something is worth it or not when asked.
Saying “Your car isn’t profitable either?” doesn’t help.
Of course my car is worth it, because without it I couldn’t do my job.

I will definitely wait until prices return to normal. I would really like to see that profitability calculation 😀
Let’s leave out all the details and just do a basic calculation.
Assuming the system operates for 20 years, that means at least €4,600 per year in electricity savings would be needed just to break even.
I’m often someone who likes to look at things optimistically, but this just can’t be made to look good anymore.
