Hello,

we are currently planning our semi-detached house.

I wanted to ask for your opinion on satellite TV.

Would you still consider satellite TV in a new build at all? So far, I have had good experiences with satellite TV.

A friend of mine told me that from 2024, fees will also be charged for satellite TV (similar to cable TV subscription fees).

Is that true? What is the story with these fees?

Does satellite TV still make sense?

Yes, I watch a lot of streaming and on-demand services, but I currently still use satellite TV for live sports.

You can also watch live sports via streams.
Since 2015, we have been streaming only and do not miss anything from the (old) traditional world.

So far, I have had good experiences with satellite.

A friend of mine told me that from 2024 satellite TV will also have fees (like the subscription fees for cable TV).

Is that true? What is the deal with these fees?

Does satellite TV even make sense anymore?

Yes, I watch a lot of streaming and media libraries, but for live sports, I still use satellite.

Please use the (unfortunately poor) search function regarding this frequently discussed topic in this forum.
What is this supposed to be about some mysterious satellite tax? Will someone go through the village checking who has a satellite dish and if they already have a “license tag”? I am not 100% sure, but I think this is nonsense. I installed satellite just a year ago and I would do it again.

It’s a very affordable option for watching free-to-air TV. However, on a large screen, the SD channels from private broadcasters look terrible. That means you end up needing HD+ and paying fees.
I would still install it—although I mostly use streaming myself—at least the dish. You could even use satellite over IP, which eliminates the need for a traditional satellite distribution system.

I think I can give a all-clear.

In the meantime, I have done more research and found little to no information about SAT fees.

There was talk that the SD channels would disappear (then you would need a subscription for HD+), but these have also been extended.

However, I have not found any general fee for SAT reception (like with cable TV).

So, would you all still have SAT installed at least as a backup?

What do you think about SAT over IP?
Is it something worth considering, or is it better to stick with the traditional classic option?

Satellite TV is generally quite affordable in terms of material and installation costs. Therefore, it can still be installed with good reason. Definitely run the cables inside conduit to allow for possible future technology changes. However, I wouldn’t install satellite connections in every room as was common in the past; instead, only in rooms where a TV is actually going to be placed today.

I consider a well-developed network infrastructure for smart home devices and access points for Wi-Fi much more important than satellite wiring.

Ultimately, the decision depends on your own preferences and needs.
