ᐅ Additional Costs Due to Revised Structural Engineering Calculations

Hello everyone,

We are currently in the final stages of our detailed planning. We wanted to convert a bathroom with a shower into a pantry and a guest WC. This would involve moving a wall on the ground floor by 45cm (18 inches) and adding an additional wall on the ground floor to divide the former shower bathroom. So far, we have not signed off on the detailed planning, but now we are being asked to pay €1500 net for a new structural calculation. Is this common practice?

I had assumed that the structural engineering would only be calculated after completing the detailed planning.

What do you think? Do I really have to cover the cost of a new calculation?

No, actually a complete structural calculation for a single-family house by a structural engineer usually costs around 1.2k–1.8k.

Now you’re coming up again with your strange prices. When I look at our structural folder for our "birdhouse," never at that price.

A simple question: Are you actually planning to move a load-bearing wall?

Thanks for the suggestion, but unfortunately, it’s not possible to do it differently from a planning perspective.
Who is the planner here? The client?
Sorry, but that mess within arm’s reach is a no-go. Poor planning!

Hello, for me a guest toilet without a window in the house is a no-go, but sometimes you really have to make compromises and set priorities.

I would double-check again. Quite expensive for this result. One more wall, one more door. Best regards

Sorry, but having that crap within arm’s reach of the cooking pot is a no-go. Poor planning!

Thanks also for your helpful input. Since you know the rest of the floor plan and understand the reasons behind this design, you can definitely see it that way and come to your own assessment.

We are building a house on a slope, and that part is underground. A light well would be right near the front door, which wouldn’t look good. If we could plan a window, we would definitely prefer that.
We will certainly have another discussion about it.
