Hello

We need to buy all new furniture for our new build.

The current pieces are just inexpensive temporary furniture that wouldn’t survive a move.

The furniture should definitely be of good quality and suitable for a new build 😀 (so nothing from, for example, discount stores). Durability is also very important.

Which furniture brands should we consider for living room cabinets (sideboard, lowboard, etc.), tables (dining table, coffee table), and upholstered furniture (sectional sofas)?

Which furniture brands offer good quality in the mid-price range?

The following brands come to mind:

Musterring
Hülsta

What other brands are there in the mid-price range where quality and price are well balanced?

Thank you for all your responses.

I was initially biased towards IKEA.

I think the cabinets from IKEA will be part of the selection.

We have now chosen gray 30x60cm (12x24 inches) tiles for the living room.

We want to first select a sectional sofa, as the house construction is just starting.

We want a U-shaped sectional sofa.
For sofas or sectional sofas, quality is very important because you sit on them for long periods every day.

Which brands of sectional sofas would you recommend, or where should we look? What features should a sectional sofa have, and what should we pay attention to in order to enjoy it for a long time without it wearing out quickly?

… that it remains easy to walk around even with a table in the middle. I would advise against a U-shape; rather opt for an L-shape plus an ottoman. This offers more flexible arrangement options.

It varies so much... in our case, the sofa is only used for about 2 hours in the evening. The dining table is the main focus.

We always sit on the sofa and only use the table for eating.

We definitely want a large U-shaped sofa to have enough space when guests are over and to be able to put up our feet.

In the living room, there is a niche between the terrace and the staircase, about 3.70m (12 feet), where the seating area will go. It should fill the space with a small gap to the terrace doors (we have two double terrace doors, and one double door will need to be blocked). Unfortunately, a lift-and-slide door was not possible from the builder’s side.

We have a large U-shaped sofa but have also experienced that this shape offers very little seating space for guests... two seats in the middle and one on each ottoman... the latter also without backrests...

...nevertheless, we find it great since it is our family sofa and works perfectly for these purposes.

My sister runs a furniture store. Although we talk all the time, I unfortunately don’t know enough to share any insider secrets here. Maybe just this:

Brands are fine and all, but in the furniture business, good advice is, in my opinion, worth its weight in gold. First of all, almost every furniture store has private label products that often offer solid quality and modern design. These you won’t find from established brand manufacturers.

On top of that, some manufacturers are really struggling, and bankruptcies or closures are happening suddenly. This means that even well-known manufacturers have to cut costs, which can definitely affect quality. The sales staff know this (at least in our case) and are upfront about it. When you also want the piece to match the floor color, a layperson is completely overwhelmed.

About Ikea—I’ve only had bad experiences, which might be because I’m quite used to higher standards. In the end, though, quality also comes with a price there. My sister recently said she was surprised at how expensive some parts were once they reached comparable quality. And I won’t even get started on the assembly service. The real question is how important is that particular piece of furniture to you? Is the basic (budget) option enough, or not?

If I had to furnish a place completely from scratch, I would first decide on a style and colors that I like. Then I’d look for the right furniture or have someone look for it and see what my budget allows. For example, I have a white staircase with solid beech steps. By chance, one manufacturer had a coat rack in solid beech with white accents that I really liked. When I saw it, the price didn’t really matter. I saved until I had exactly that coat rack. 😎
