ᐅ Buying a Kitchen – How Do You Negotiate the Price?

A kitchen topic: After just two consultations, I’m already completely fed up with those annoying kitchen salespeople.
I feel totally ripped off. You look at a kitchen, ask for the price—which of course isn’t displayed—and then you faint... €20,000 (about $21,600).
After the initial shock, the salesperson offers the first discounts... after two hours, you’re down to €12,000 (about $13,000) but still feel like you’re being taken for a ride.

If you then want to compare kitchens from the same brand, you can’t, because nobody gives you the itemized lists.

Everyone knows that dealers do this on purpose to be able to offer those huge discounts. I’m done with it.

How do you negotiate your kitchen, or how do you compare prices?

Because we didn't want to deal with such games, we ended up at RO..ER. It turns out they also offer kitchens from well-known brands. The price was reasonable, as was the installation service. We selected the built-in appliances separately anyway, since we had specific preferences. Here, too, the extra cost compared to discount stores was limited.

We did the same there—bought the kitchen without appliances. However, during the kitchen installation, all provided appliances are installed. In total, we paid 7,000€ (approximately $7,700) for a kitchen run of about 10m (33 feet) including Neff appliances.

Oh, buying a kitchen! My absolute favorite topic!

I had a similar experience to DerDa. For me, kitchen salespeople have become the absolute worst profession. By far the most unprofessional trade in the entire new build process. The way they throw around ridiculous discounts is just ridiculous. You go into a kitchen showroom and say your total budget is $10,000. Then they design a kitchen within the floor plan and say it costs $22,000. Before I could even react, they quickly added, "But I can give you a $5,000 discount." "Plus, we currently have a promotion for new build customers – that’s another $3,000 off" (new build discount! How absurd is that?! Who comes up with such nonsense???) And if I signed today, he would reduce the price by another $2,000. Then I realized if I had said the limit was $8,000 from the start, the final price for the same kitchen would probably have been $10,000 instead of $12,000. And it’s the same everywhere. All kinds of wild discounts due to clearance sales, stock liquidation, fairs, wars, full moons, or the shifting of the Earth’s magnetic field...

Sorry, but I just find this unprofessional and it makes me feel like I’m being taken for a ride.
We ended up buying ours at the Swedish retailer. Good advice! And the quality is right, too.

Yes, we have had similar experiences.

The “major” providers in our area that we visited all operate with that ridiculous discount system.

But even much more reputable companies (with many branches throughout Germany) use this silly discount gimmick.

In our case, we went with a smaller kitchen maker (family business). They offer custom kitchens, have their own carpentry workshop, provide much higher furniture quality, and surprisingly even a fairer price than the discount clowns after deductions.

Best regards,

Dirk

Why?

That is exactly what the buyer / customer wants here in this country...

It wasn’t like that for us!
We gave our budget limit. The seller then mentioned that you should estimate 50% for appliances and about 700 per linear meter (2.3 feet) for our chosen kitchen front.
Then I presented my kitchen design, which he slightly modified. He also said that when selecting appliances, we definitely shouldn’t focus on the price.
He then suggested the interior cabinets, knowingly staying within our limit.
Finally, he ran the program to calculate the cost, and the total came to a reasonable amount. The seller was very friendly and has now planned and sold almost all the kitchens in our new housing development.

Yes, you are right, this tactic works on quite a few...
Now you have some idea of what I had to listen to almost daily. Had to listen, because as of today I no longer allow it. If the prospective client is incorrigible, I send them directly to Heinz von Heiden – there you will get help Which well-known song from a Westphalian echoes in my mind, I’ll keep to myself for now
